The player's needs may differ from game to game, but every survival game challenges the player with finding critical resources to keep themselves alive. It might be a power core to keep a vital generator running or wild berries to keep characters fed. Whatever these resources, the player isn't far from seeing Game Over.

Jungle survival sim Green Hell is deep, complex, and difficult. There are many resources the player will need to keep themselves fed and hydrated, fight infections, and otherwise keep themselves alive. One of the most basic and essential resources in Green Hell is fire, allowing the player to cook food and stay warm through the long nights. Here's everything players need to know about starting a fire.

Tools For Fire Making

Starting a fire is essential for boiling water and other necessities. Building the fire's base is not a difficult process, but it does require a number of crafting materials: 6 small sticks, 8 regular sticks, 1 hand drill, and 1 dry leaf. Finding sticks is simple, as many of the jungle's trees can be cut to provide them. To collect them from trees, the player will need a cutting tool. The player can craft a stone blade out of 2 small stones or craft a bone knife out of 1 bone and 1 rope. Alternatively, the player can find a knife in the deserted tribal village encountered early in the game.

Chopping a tree provides various resources, including planks and sticks of different sizes. Bigger sticks can be broken down into smaller ones, so if the player only has the larger variety, they can still produce the resource they need.

After collecting all the necessary wood, select the Small Fire object from the notebook. This allows the player to choose where to make their fire. Gathered resources can now be deposited there to make the fire itself. The player is one step closer to surviving in one of the most brutal survival games around.

Fuel And Ignition

With the fire base built, the player can turn their attention to igniting it. This requires a hand drill and either dry leaves or a bird's nest. Dry leaves are brown unlike regular leaves and can be found on banana trees or nut trees. Alternatively, the player can dry leaves themselves with a bamboo dryer. Simply collect leaves by cutting bushes, then use the bamboo drier to dry them. If the player wants to use nests instead, they should search trees as well as the jungle floor. Bird's nests are more random and, like hunting armadillos, can be much more difficult than finding dry leaves.

Crafting a hand drill sticks to a tried-and-true survival game formula, requiring 1 stick or plank and 1 small stick, materials the player probably already gathered while harvesting materials for the fire base. Open the crafting menu and combine the crafting materials to create the drill. To use the hand drill, hover over it in the backpack and select Use from the menu. If the player has either a bird's nest or dry leaves in their inventory to act as tinder, the character will place the hand drill in front of them and prepare to start a fire.

Using a nest or dry leaves with the hand drill will create a flame. Note that if the character doesn't have enough stamina they will run out before completing the process, wasting the tinder and depleting the hand drill's durability. When the ember is prepared, approach the fire base, and the game will display the "Ignite" prompt. Select it to start the fire. By adding leaves, feathers, and other flammable items to keep the fire going now that it's lit, the player can see this long survival game through to the end.

Green Hell is available now for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
