Highlights

  • A release date strategy is crucial for GreedFall 2's success so that it can learn from past mistakes and avoid competition overlap.
  • Spiders can't afford to repeat history; GreedFall 2 needs to make a splash without being overshadowed.

Indie developer Spiders has confirmed that GreedFall 2: The Dying World, the sequel to its cult classic BioWare-esque RPG, is officially set to enter early access this summer. According to Spiders, GreedFall 2 will be in early access indefinitely until the developer can develop a game that the players want. Still, no specific date has been set yet for when the sequel's early access period will begin. However, a gameplay reveal before early access will confirm its official release date. When it comes to Spiders setting GreedFall 2's early access release date, the developer should consider something arguably vital to the game's success.

Whether games can garner enough attention from there can often determine how successful they are in the long run, so developers should strategically plan their release windows to avoid being overshadowed by another release. Guerrilla Games' Horizon series is a great example of games with "unlucky" release dates, but GreedFall also fell into the same trap in 2019. Now, Spiders can't afford to make the same mistake with GreedFall 2: The Dying World.

GreedFall 2 Needs to Be Strategic About Its Release Date

GreedFall 2 Can't Pull Another Horizon With Its Release Date

Despite its success, Guerrilla Games' Horizon franchise is notorious for having unlucky release dates, primarily because of the games that each installment in the series has shared release windows with. The series' first title, Horizon Zero Dawn, was released on February 28, 2017. While it eventually achieved great success, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild launched alongside the Nintendo Switch on March 3, 2017. As such, not only was Horizon Zero Dawn overshadowed by Breath of the Wild, but it also quickly became yesterday's best as the Nintendo Switch burst onto the scene.

Zero Dawn's sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, then launched five years later on February 18, 2022. Unfortunately, its release was a bit of deja vu for the developer, as FromSoftware's Elden Ring was released just a week later. Interestingly and quite unluckily for the Horizon series, both Breath of the Wild and Elden Ring won the Game of the Year award for their respective years. GreedFall 2's release date should take note of these unfortunate events while also ensuring it doesn't make the same mistake that it made with GreedFall.

GreedFall 2 Can't Afford to Make the Same Mistake Twice

Despite the Horizon franchise arguably taking home the trophy for unfortunate release dates, GreedFall's release date isn't exempt from acknowledgment. GreedFall launched on September 10, 2019, and while it would have been great for Spiders not to have any competition at the time, Gearbox's highly anticipated Borderlands 3 launched only three days later. This means, for the most part, that GreedFall essentially had three days to make a name for itself before being pushed to the back burner.

Spiders has yet to confirm an early access release date for GreedFall 2, only that it will begin this summer. To avoid making the same mistake twice, GreedFall 2 should raise its awareness of other summer titles. For example, Destiny 2: The Final Shape and Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree are both releasing in June, so GreedFall 2 should arguably avoid a June release at all costs if possible. That said, both July and August are largely void of major releases, leaving that window primed and ready for GreedFall 2.
