GreedFall 2: The Dying World is the upcoming prequel to Spiders' 2019 action RPG GreedFall, currently slated for a summer 2024 early access release. Set three years before the events of GreedFall, GreedFall 2 puts players into the shoes of a Teer Fradee native who has been forced to leave the island and transported to the Old Continent of Gacane. Rather than launching as a full release, GreedFall 2 will begin in early access as part of Spiders' vision to involve players in the development process and ensure the prequel is everything they want in the next GreedFall game. This means that GreedFall 2 is bound to be a massive improvement over its predecessor, so players should expect plenty of things to be different once it is complete.

There are quite a few features from GreedFall that GreedFall 2: The Dying World could improve — namely, its combat, character customization, and companion storylines. It has already been confirmed that Spiders has improved GreedFall 2's combat from the first game by allowing players more control over their companions during combat and providing more role-based abilities for each character. However, there is one area GreedFall 2 could still spice up that not much has been revealed about so far. Specifically, GreedFall 2 could improve the first game's exploration by looking to its peers for inspiration and crafting a world worth poring over.

The premise of GreedFall 2 suggests its protagonist will likely face some difficulties that GreedFall's De Sardet never had to experience.

How GreedFall 2 Could Improve the First Game's Exploration

GreedFall's Exploration Feels Repetitive and Flat

GreedFall is certainly a beautiful game, especially when played on a PC with decent hardware. Teer Fradee is a wondrous island full of gorgeous foliage often bathed in hazy beams of sunlight, making it worthwhile for the visuals alone. Unfortunately, any game that encourages exploration needs beauty that is more than skin deep, and GreedFall just doesn't have that.

Exploring GreedFall's island of Teer Fradee can be rewarding at times, as players can find plenty of treasures, unique enemies, and crafting ingredients around many corners. However, this sense of discovery wears off after each new area begins feeling just like the last, only with a different coat of paint on it. Even so, GreedFall 2 already has exploration inspiration at its fingertips, thanks to the fact that Spiders has intentionally crafted GreedFall as an ode to the golden age of BioWare.

GreedFall 2 Should Look to Its BioWare Peers for Exploration Inspiration

Since GreedFall is designed to feel and function like a classic BioWare title, GreedFall 2 can shamelessly look to some of BioWare's best games for inspiration when it comes to the layout and execution of its explorable world. Based on what has been revealed so far, GreedFall 2's world is already more visually stunning than the first game's, it just needs to do right by players who set out to explore it.

BioWare games like Mass Effect Legendary Edition might be a good stimulus for GreedFall 2, as it has some of the best exploration of any BioWare title. Mass Effect Legendary Edition's explorable areas are very linear in design, but there is more than enough variation in their details that they rarely ever feel like the last. Furthermore, there is always a wide variety of special encounters, valuable loot, and worthwhile information players can find off the beaten path in Mass Effect Legendary Edition that they wouldn't find simply pursuing the main objective.

Dragon Age: Origins is another classic BioWare title that offers worthwhile exploration, as players can find themselves engaging in challenging yet rewarding combat with unique enemies as they explore Thedas.

There is clearly more than enough inspiration for exploration at GreedFall 2's disposal, especially in the classic BioWare titles it and its predecessor reflect. With enough diversity and plenty of rewarding opportunities around every corner, GreedFall 2's biggest strength could be its exploration, allowing it to succeed where the first game fell short.
