GreedFall 2: The Dying World is Spiders' upcoming sequel to the cult-classic BioWare-esque RPG GreedFall and has finally been given a release window of sorts. During 2024's Nacon Connect showcase on February 29, Spiders gave a brief preview of GreedFall 2 and revealed that it would be entering Early Access this summer.

GreedFall 2 isn't the first single-player game in recent memory to launch in Early Access, as Baldur's Gate 3 also had a rather lengthy Early Access. Regardless, it managed to win 2023's Game of the Year, so this could very well be a blessing in disguise for GreedFall 2 as well. Those accustomed to how Early Access works know that it essentially involves a game developer including players in the development process, but there is still a lot of nuance in how Spiders has chosen to handle the Early Access development of GreedFall 2.

GreedFall was a great experience for traditional RPG fans, but GreedFall 2 could go even further with the addition of a few major features.

GreedFall 2's Early Access Explained

As GreedFall 2: The Dying World's Early Access period doesn't begin until summer 2024, Spiders may reveal more about it as the launch approaches. That being said, the developer has already disclosed information concerning it, including what features will be available at the start of GreedFall 2's Early Access period and what will be introduced later:

  • Early Access will only be available on Steam
  • Early Access will be cheaper than the full release
  • Saves won't be compatible between updates
  • The Early Access period is currently indefinite
  • Early Access will include character creation
  • The first chapters of the main quest will be available at the start of Early Access
  • Several regional quests will be available at the start of Early Access
  • Teer Fradee, Thynia, and Uxantis will be available at the start of Early Access
  • GreedFall 2's first companions will be introduced at the start of Early Access
  • GreedFall 2's crafting system will not be available during Early Access
  • Future updates will introduce new regions, new companions, new quests, new skills, and new customization options

As far as what GreedFall 2's initial Early Access period will include, Spiders has confirmed players will be allowed to create their own character, explore the regions of Teer Fradee, Thynia, and Uxantis (two of which are likely on GreedFall 2's Old Continent), meet some of the sequel's new companions, and complete a variety of main and side quests. GreedFall 2's Early Access will also be cheaper than the full release, which provides some incentive for those who wish to be involved in the development of the game and simultaneously pay less for it.

GreedFall 2 will only be available on Steam throughout Early Access , and it is currently unknown just how long the period will last.

GreedFall 2 Has Unfortunate News About Its Early Access Saves

Perhaps the most disheartening news about GreedFall 2's Early Access period is that save files will not be compatible between updates, which presumably also means that Early Access saves will not transfer to the full game either. However, Baldur's Gate 3 followed a similar set of rules during its nearly three-year Early Access period and still walked away with 2023's Game of the Year award, so this unfortunate feature doesn't necessarily write off GreedFall 2 so soon. As patches are implemented throughout GreedFall 2's Early Access, it will likely be in players' best interest for their save files not to transfer anyway.

Spiders has clarified that the team is excited to learn what it's like to involve players in the development process, as this is the first time it has ever done Early Access. At the very least, GreedFall 2 is obviously a much more ambitious game than its predecessor, so as long as Spiders remains committed throughout, Early Access may pay off in the long run.
