While Rockstar Games has confirmed that it will be releasing a standalone version of GTA Online and a next-gen version of Grand Theft Auto 5 this year, fans are wanting to know what comes next for the studio. Rockstar Games has historically been fairly tight-lipped about its upcoming projects, which has resulted in many fans spreading rumors and "leaks" online to fill the void. The latest "leak" claims that one of Rockstar's new games is a remaster of the classic Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, but fans shouldn't get too excited just yet.

This rumor comes from a big 4chan AMA "leak" that claimed to reveal the Grand Theft Auto 6 release window, among other things. The AMA was pulled, but the information from it was posted on Reddit. While the supposed leak mainly focused on Grand Theft Auto 6, it also touched on some of Rockstar's other projects that are supposedly in the works, with one of those being the aforementioned Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas remaster.

According to the Reddit post, someone had asked the "leaker" if a Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas remaster is in development. The leaker reportedly responded, "The anniversary is coming up, right?" It's unclear exactly what they meant by this, as the next major anniversary for GTA: San Andreas isn't for a few years.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is turning 17 in 2021, which isn't a significant anniversary. However, it will be hitting its 20th anniversary in 2024, so maybe that's what the leaker is referencing. But that's three years away and it's hard to believe that Rockstar Games is already working on a remaster for a PS2-era game that isn't coming out for another three years.

One significant PS2-era Grand Theft Auto anniversary this year is the Grand Theft Auto 3 20th anniversary. GTA 3 originally launched in October 2001, and there have been rumors that Rockstar plans on releasing remasters of all three PS2-era GTA games. Some fans believe that the Grand Theft Auto remasters will even be announced as soon as Super Bowl LV on Sunday, though everyone should keep their expectations in check.

While Rockstar may or may not be planning on releasing Grand Theft Auto remasters, there's no concrete evidence that such an announcement will take place this weekend. Not only that, but this "leak" doesn't provide any evidence backing up its claims. Like with other gaming leaks, it's best for fans to wait for official information from Rockstar.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is available now for mobile, PC, PS2, and Xbox.
