Shortly after Rockstar Games launched Grand Theft Auto 5 in 2013, it released the game's online multiplayer component, Grand Theft Auto Online. Grand Theft Auto Online has proven to be a massive success for Rockstar Games, in turn giving GTA 5 unprecedented longevity. Grand Theft Auto Online is still going strong to this day, with Rockstar regularly releasing new content for the game.

Rockstar has typically released new content for Grand Theft Auto Online in relatively small batches, though it occasionally drops a larger expansion, like The Cayo Perico Heist DLC. Rumor has it that Rockstar may be planning an even bigger update for Grand Theft Auto Online, and while this rumor has been out there for years with nothing substantial coming from it, it's been reiterated in a new report.

Xfire has published a report, citing supposed Rockstar Games insider Matheus as its source, that Grand Theft Auto Online will be adding Liberty City to the game as part of a new expansion. A Liberty City expansion for Grand Theft Auto Online has been rumored for years now with nothing coming of it, and with Grand Theft Auto 6 in active development, it seems increasingly unlikely that it will actually materialize. Considering this, fans should take the leak with a big grain of salt.

The report claims that Grand Theft Auto Online players will have more to look forward to besides just a Liberty City expansion. If the report is to be believed, GTA Online is getting "as many as 20 new radio stations," in addition to a new game mode called Cops 'n Crooks. On top of all this, new story content featuring Don Percival is also said to be on the way for GTA Online, but again, it's best that fans treat this news with skepticism for now.

Rockstar Games recently released a standalone version of Grand Theft Auto Online that brought the massive popular multiplayer game to new-gen consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Considering this, it's within the realm of possibility that Rockstar would try to keep those players engaged with a map expansion, but since GTA Online has been out for nearly a decade at this point with no expansion at that level, it's somewhat hard to believe that the studio would just now pull the trigger on the idea.

Making it even harder to believe is the fact that Grand Theft Auto 6 is in development, and according to various reports, GTA 6 will have its own online multiplayer experience. Hopefully more information comes to light soon that either confirms the rumors or lays them to rest.

Grand Theft Auto Online is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
