For years the GTA modding community has been clamoring for a stable way to play Grand Theft Auto 5 in VR. Now, all their dreams are coming true at last. There is finally a Grand Theft Auto 5 virtual reality mod that actually works.

Last week, Reddit user LukeRoss00 posted the latest version of his GTA 5 VR mod "R.E.A.L" on GitHub. This fourth release of "R.E.A.L" features full gameplay functionality, VR in cutscenes, and most importantly a simplified setup process that allows most handy PC Grand Theft Auto 5 players to be able to easily install and play the open world game in virtual reality. Once they download the files from Github, players just need to unpack the downloaded files and run a batch file to play GTA 5 in full immersive VR.

LukeRoss00 has been working some major quality of life improvements for the mod and it really shows in the latest version. Graphical settings can now be updated without requiring the game to be relaunched and players can set the graphical settings as high as they can go, finally making for a visually comparable VR experience to the regular game. The game can also simultaneously run top graphical mods like NaturalVision Remastered, VisualV, and GTA 5 Redux if players' computers are powerful enough.

The universal FOV fix now allows cutscenes to finally be enabled, overcoming a big functionality hurdle that was present in previous iterations of the mod. The animations for aiming down sights and getting into vehicles are made smoother by this fix as well. More minor updates and fixes include smoother camera rotation is smoother and a reduction in screen flickering.

GTA 5 has a vibrant and active modding community that is constantly creating and updating new content for the single player game. Grand Theft Auto Online is so dominant on Twitch due to the GTA Online modding community who are doing just as much, if not more work, than Rockstar to keep the game fresh for players that are logging on daily.

It will still be a long time until Grand Theft Auto 6 comes out, with rumors that it was slated for a 2020 release being debunked. The game has been out for over six years now and continues to thrive. Each year, more and more is being discovered about GTA 5 as players continue to dig into the code and release new mods that improve the experience for PC players.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is out now for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
