With the launch of the PlayStation VR2 just over a week away, Gran Turismo 7 developer Polyphony Digital has released new details about what fans of the popular racing series can expect when the title receives support for Sony’s high-powered headset. Taking advantage of the powerful PlayStation 5 to create VR experiences that can offer far greater depth and visual fidelity than titles available on mobile headsets like the Meta Quest 2, the console-tethered PlayStation VR2 was praised by Oculus founder Palmer Luckey recently.

Making its debut on the original PlayStation in late 1997, the first Gran Turismo set the stage for what would become one of the most iconic franchises in gaming. With subsequent entries appearing on nearly every PlayStation console over the years, the Gran Turismo franchise has become synonymous with simulation racing for millions of gamers. When it was first announced that players would receive a free PS VR2 update for Gran Turismo 7, the latest entry in the franchise, some gamers were skeptical, fearing the game would only receive a bare-bones VR mode as occurred with Gran Turismo Sport on the original PS VR. Polyphony Digital quickly clarified that this would not be the case, but fans of the racing series still had many questions about what the PS VR2 update would include.

The blog post goes on to explain how Polyphony Digital is taking advantage of the PlayStation VR2’s next-gen features to ensure that gamers get the best possible experience with the VR racing modes. The developers detail how the eye-tracking feature of the PlayStation VR2 allows Gran Turismo 7 to make use of foveated rendering, which ensures that the game will always be rendered in the highest detail exactly where players are looking, while dynamic 3D audio will let plays experience “a whole new dimension of highly immersive gameplay.”

When PlayStation VR2 support arrives for Gran Turismo 7 later this month it is sure to be one of the best-looking racing games in VR, rivaling even many high-end PC racing titles. Fortunately for players worried about getting motion sick sitting behind the wheel of a supercar, those with sensitive stomachs can still enjoy Gran Turismo 7 using the PlayStation VR2’s Cinematic mode.

Gran Turismo 7 is available now on PS4 and PS5.
