In most modern video games, multiplayer functionality is available right from the get-go, with players simply having to select the option from the main menu. Gran Turismo 7 does things a little differently, however, instead forcing players to complete a number of tasks before allowing them to enjoy the game's local and online multiplayer modes.

The good news is that unlocking multiplayer in Gran Turismo 7 is relatively straightforward, though the process is far from a fast one. Players can expect to spend around two and a half hours in single-player mode before they'll be able to play with others, so those hoping for a quick and easy multiplayer fix may find themselves a little disappointed.

How to Unlock Multiplayer in Gran Turismo 7

Gran Turismo 7's multiplayer mode can be accessed via the World Map screen, but not straight away. First, players will need to unlock the Multiplayer and Sport pavilions, which, like all of the other areas that are accessed via the World Map screen, are locked away behind main story progression. To make matters worse, multiplayer is one of the very last things that players will unlock in Gran Turismo 7.

The Multiplayer and Sport pavilions both become available after players have completed Menu Book 9. This is accomplished by securing a podium finish in the Tokyo Highway Parade Race, for which players will also receive either a Nissan Silvia Q's (S13) '88, a Mazda Eunos Roadster (NA) '89, or a Toyota Corolla Levin 1600GT Apex (AE86) '83 as a gift car. It's also worth noting that players will need to have completed the first eight Menu Books before they can enter the tournament, as well as having passed their National B License.

How Multiplayer Works in Gran Turismo 7

For local split-screen multiplayer or races with friends online, players will need to visit the Multiplayer Pavilion, which can be found in the bottom right-hand corner of the World Map screen. From here, they'll be able to add a second controller or create or join a lobby with up to 19 other players.

As well as regular multiplayer, Gran Turismo 7 also allows players to take part in special ranked races. These are accessed via the Sport Pavilion, which players can find in the top right-hand corner of the world map screen. Races tend to happen every ten minutes or so, so there may be a little waiting around involved beforehand. Players can use this time to familiarize themselves with the track they'll soon be racing on though, so the time is not exactly wasted.

Gran Turismo 7 is available now on PS4 and PS5.
