Last year, Gearbox Software and Counterplay Games released Godfall, a brand-new online multiplayer title with a heavier focus on melee combat. With Gearbox's latest looter-slasher being a success, its announcement at E3 for future content updates is no surprise. Alongside a new trailer for the game's first expansion, Fire & Darkness, came the announcement that Godfall will also be heading to the PlayStation 4.

Godfall had originally been slated as a timed PS5 console exclusive, with a PC release through the Epic Games Store. Since the window of its timed exclusivity has now expired, this allows for the title to come onto other systems. With this new backport release, fans who have loved other looter-shooters like Outriders can now get a chance to try this take on the genre when its PS4 version is scheduled to release August 10, 2021.

For the fans who already own a PlayStation 5, or plan on getting one in the future, anyone who purchases Godfall on the PS4 can get an upgrade to the PS5 version free. A few months ago, the last update for Godfall, the Primal Update, brought in a lot of new features and cosmetics. The Fire & Darkness expansion and free content Lightbringer update, which was announced in the same trailer as the PS4 port, will be arriving available on both platforms. All players require is the base version of the game to access all this new content.

Even months after the release of Godfall, PS5 consoles are still quite difficult to obtain. Thanks to this release, a larger audience of people will be able to experience it for the first time, and won't need to pay for the upgraded PS5 version. It was also stated after the announcement of this expansion that it would support cross-gen play between the PS4 and PS5 versions. This allows for all players to be able to cooperate and play with one another in many of its different gameplay modes.

One of the key components that was highlighted during this announcement was highly requested matchmaking, which will soon be going into beta. Godfall Senior Technical Producer Dick Heyne says both the PS4 version and matchmaking are "just the tip of the iceberg," and went on to detail the many numerous expansive changes and additions that will come with the Fire & Darkness expansion.

Godfall is available now on PC and PS5, with its PS4 version being released August 10, 2021.
