This story can run parallel to the current events, with Kratos shown to embrace the idea of love again after having mourned his previous family for so long. Moreover, Faye’s characterization can be portrayed under this plotline, with her motives understood by the players.

There were multiple realms in God of War PS4, although the game made the mistake of not showing Asgard and a few other areas. The sequel can show Odin’s plans in full, with an overarching aspect being his attempts to take Kratos and Atreus out permanently.
This can be shown as its own story rather than simply being stated, meaning Odin can appear in person and the game can present cutscenes where he’s seen in Asgard contemplating his next move against the protagonists and the intentions he has.

The ending of God of War PS4 brought a vision from Atreus where he saw Thor attacking him and Kratos. This is thus far unresolved, with the sequel placed in a way to tell Thor’s side of the story. This can pick up from his knowledge of his sons’ demise at the hands of the protagonists.
Rather than present Thor as a one-note villain, the sequel can have him as a layered character. To this end, Thor’s own arc can be shown where he makes plans for vengeance, along with his point of view concerning how he perceives Kratos and Atreus.
6 Atreus Dealing With The Knowledge Of Kratos' Past
Rather than indulging in too many side missions this round, the sequel can dedicate a storyline for Atreus where he finds out about Kratos’ previous family. With this knowledge, he can be shown realizing he had a stepmother and a sister.
Atreus’ reconciliation of this fact can clash with his own background, as he realizes that Kratos had an entirely separate life before Atreus was born. This storyline can further shape the father-son angle, with Atreus’ opinion of Kratos changing from what it once was.
5 Freya's Depression At Losing Baldur
The expectation is that Freya will be springing her bid for revenge on Kratos, which she promised at the end of God of War PS4. However, an additional storyline the sequel can bring in is the state Freya is in, mainly her depression at losing Baldur.
This way, players can get a look into the character independent of her connection to Kratos and Atreus, along with sympathizing with her motives rather than placing her as just another villain. The storyline can depict Freya as she loses her sense of self and how she uses vengeance as a motivator.
4 The Jotuns' Return
Kratos and Atreus unexpectedly began the path to Ragnarok during the previous game, where they ended up in Jotunheim to see the remnants of its inhabitants. However, the sequel can reveal that the Jotuns did survive and are looking to return.
This angle will coincide with Faye’s plans for Atreus’ future, which was shown on the tapestry at the end of God of War PS4. Much like the Titans were for Kratos in the original series, the Jotuns can be the side he favors during Ragnarok.
3 Mimir And Kratos' Friendship
Although he’s received favors from a number of allies in the games, Kratos has never had a story involving a character who becomes his true friend. The sequel can build upon Mimir’s allegiance to Kratos, eventually forming a real friendship.
This can develop further by Kratos opening himself up to Mimir, though he was resistant to doing so in God of War PS4. The story can be the progressive brotherhood that forms between the two, as Kratos finally has someone he can rely on.
2 Battle Between Asgard And Midgard
Ragnarok is the overall consequence that the game will be dealing with, but it’s unlikely the whole event will be shown in this title itself. In its place, the sequel can build towards a battle between Midgard and Asgard, with Kratos and Atreus as leaders of the former realm.
Under this plotline, the game’s story can be the lead-up toward this battle, as the protagonists try to rally their allies in order to lay siege to Asgard. The struggles to get prepared for this battle can be placed as the basis of the story.
1 Atreus Seeing Visions Of The Future
The stinger of God of War PS4 can be shown as the beginning of this plotline, with Atreus gradually receiving more visions of what’s to come as his fate of becoming Loki comes on the horizon. An angle this story can take is by showing Atreus preparing for the future.
Due to his visions, Atreus could warn his father and allies of what’s to come before it happens, thereby turning the entire story about precognition. Since this arc offers lots of liberties, the sequel can be presented as a vision Atreus has.
