Please Note: This article contains MAJOR spoilers for God of War Ragnarok.Proceed at your own risk.God of War Ragnarok provides a great ending for Kratos’ character who is now destined to become a beloved god among those in Midgard as he attempts to help rebuild the destruction caused by Ragnarok. However, God of War Ragnarok does leave the door open for future games in the series, this time with Atreus as the main character as he prepares to journey out of Midgard to find the remaining giants.

Atreus’ journey from 2018’s God of War to the end of God of War Ragnarok has seen him grow into one of the most caring characters in the series, often empathizing with those that wish to hurt him or those closest to him. Now that he has left Kratos’ side to embark on his journey, fans will be eager to follow his growth into a powerful god. While neither Santa Monica Studio nor Sony has confirmed a future game in the series, fans will hope that the series will return with a new location filled with unexplored places and new gods.

Atreus Should Explore New Lands

In God of War Ragnarok, Atreus travels to Ironwood and meets with Angrboda, the first giant he meets after his mother passed away. In Ironwood, Atreus learns that while many of the giants died or chose to have their souls transferred to an orb, a few chose to leave Midgard and seek refuge in faraway lands. This could mean that a future spin-off in the series could focus on Atreus’ new quest of finding the surviving giants and perhaps even return them to Midgard or their home in Jotunheim.

2018’s God of War hinted at the possibility of the series moving over to a different land by showing symbols from other mythologies. With Kratos seemingly set to remain in Midgard as a beloved god, the hinted mythologies could be explored by Atreus. This would mean that future games in the series could even completely step away from Kratos, and instead follow the life of Atreus as he learns what it means to be a god and a giant.

Atreus Needs a New Weapon

Atreus aims his bow at Hrimthur's Wall in God of War Ragnarok

Some of the best combat missions in God of War Ragnarok came while playing Atreus as it gave a fresh take on how the game is to be played. Unlike his father, Atreus relies more on ranged combat, especially since his only weapon is a bow, and when he needs to get up close and personal, he simply swings his bow to damage enemies. However, if Atreus is going to be exploring new lands and likely meeting other powerful enemies, he will need a new melee weapon to keep up.

While Atreus is extremely skilled at using the bow, there are certain situations where melee weapons will be required, and with Kratos no longer around to fill this role, Atreus should be given a new weapon. Whether it is a simple weapon like a sword, or something more meaningful, like Laevateinn, the weapon forged by Loki in mythology, he will need a more powerful weapon if he is to fight other gods. Since there is no information on how the gods from these other regions will react toward an outsider, Atreus will need to be ready to face any challenge.

Sindri Should Play a Vital Role

Sindri in God of War Ragnarok

At the start of God of War Ragnarok, Sindri is arguably Atreus' closest ally apart from his father, with the dwarf helping Atreus learn more about the giants by accompanying him as he revisits the many shrines across Midgard. For much of the game, Sindri was his usual self, aiding Kratos and Atreus on their journey whenever they come across one of his workshops, and even on occasion acting as Atreus’ companions. However, following the death of Brok at the hands of Odin, Sindri’s entire personality changes as he begins to blame both Kratos and Atreus for his brother’s death.

Even after the events of Ragnarok, when Sindri reluctantly aided Kratos and Atreus, he still left without a single word, making it seem that he has completely forgone any friendship he once had with Atreus. Like Freya in the beginning of God of War Ragnarok, Sindri could reappear in a possible future game starring Atreus, foiling his plans and attempting to get revenge for his brother’s death. With all the tricks up his sleeve and the relationship he once had with Atreus, he would be an interesting character for Atreus to fight, who may even redeem himself and gain Sindri as a follower.

God of War Ragnarok turned the series on its head with an ending that sees Atreus leaving Midgard on a quest to save the last surviving giants, and Kratos staying behind to help rebuild the nine realms. While no future game has been confirmed, the story of God of War finally has a chance to step out of Kratos’ shadow and expand to allow Atreus to take the helm. Of course, this would mean that future games will likely be very different since Atreus is still learning what it means to be a god and a giant, and his path to discovery could unlock new powers he never imagined he would have.
