The God of War series has featured some of the most popular myths and legends of the Norse world to add a lot of enjoyable content. After moving from the Greek mythos to the Norse mythos back in 2018, the game has now focused on a much older Kratos and his son, who was revealed to be Loki. With God of War: Ragnarok's release inching closer, the stage is set for players to fight the Aesir; however, many fans are wondering if Fenrir, the wolf that kills Odin, will be featured in Kratos and Atreus’ quest to defeat the gods.

Fenrir is a key figure in the story of Ragnarok as he is not only responsible for Odin’s death but is also the son of the Aesir Loki and the giant Angrboda, who was revealed in the God of War: Ragnarok trailer. With the difficulty that Kratos had with Baldur throughout the previous game, the players are going to need a massive boost to take on the likes of Thor and Odin, so Fenrir could be introduced to help Kratos fight Odin and, confusing, explore the story of Loki and Fenrir.

Fenrir and the Story of Ragnarok

Tyr and fenrir

Ragnarok entails a series of events that ultimately leads to the death of a lot of the Aesir and the drowning of the entire world. At the start of Ragnarok, the wolves chasing the Sun and Moon Skoll and Hati will swallow their targets, causing natural disasters around the world that help free Fenrir from his prison under the Earth. The giant wolf then proceeds to charge toward the Aesir and ultimately swallows Odin as many of the other gods die around them. Fenrir is ultimately killed by one of Odin’s sons, Vidar, which marks the beginning of the end of Ragnarok. It is important to remember that a lot of the events and characters will be changed to fit in Kratos and the God of War storyline.

Odin is notable for being one of the most powerful gods, which makes Fenrir an important figure in Norse mythology. As a son of Loki, Fenrir’s place in God of War: Ragnarok is up in the air since the series currently features Loki as a young boy still realizing his powers. However, Fenrir will need to be included in the upcoming game as his power will undoubtedly be required during the fight with Odin and the remaining Aesir that threatens Kratos and Atreus’ safety.

Fenrir in God of War

With the need for Fenrir to be introduced in God of War: Ragnarok, the developer Santa Monica Studio does face a challenge in fitting him into the God of War mythos. Mythologically, Fenrir is the child of Loki and Angrboda, both of whom will feature in the second game; however, Loki is still discovering much of his power, and the game has already featured one other character that was also Loki’s child in the Norse mythos: Jormungandr, the World Serpent.

Fenrir may not exist yet, but if the World Serpent can time travel, then somehow working Fenrir into the present may not be that difficult. If and however it happens, he will be one of Atreus’ allies. Fans should expect to meet and interact with the great wolf and will most likely fight alongside him as Kratos and Atreus lead the charge against the Aesir. However Fenrir will be handled in the game, his presence is something that almost seems necessary for the plot of the game.

With God of War: Ragnarok set to end the Norse mythology line for the series, fans are expecting to fight against some of the toughest Aesir. Following the events of the first game, it is clear that Kratos and Atreus would have an extremely hard time against the likes of Odin and Thor, especially after they lost Frey as an ally, so they will undoubtedly need help. While Jormungandr will help fight Thor, at least per the mythology, the game will need Fenrir to help the duo fight Odin, who will likely be the final boss. As the release date approaches, more details for God of War: Ragnarok should come out, and Fenrir is one character that a lot of fans want to see.
