One common, if flawed criticism often lobbied against Microsoft is the lack of true Xbox exclusives, as the majority of its games can also be played on PC. Ironic for this criticism, then, is the seeming exodus of PS4 exclusives coming to PC. Death Stranding recently released for PC, for example, and Horizon Zero Dawn will join it later this summer. New rumors, which both of these ports started off as, now state that God of War is joining them.

Recent statements have made it clear that not all PS4 exclusives are coming to PC, which led many to believe that its biggest titles like God of War would retain that special exclusivity. If these rumors are true, though, that's not the case whatsoever, and it would seem almost any title is eligible. However, despite contrary belief, PC ports are good for console games and especially so for God of War.

God of War PC Port

First, it's worth mentioning that this rumor stems from Rand Al Thor and Jez Corden, who suggested a God of War PC port would be happening or revealed in August. Doubling down on is the Corden comment on a Horizon Zero Dawn PC post that, "[HZD] won't be the last PlayStation exclusive hitting PC either! Awesome to see." Given the source, while it's hard to believe that something could be happening as soon as August, it's also hard to not believe them.

Many think this ruins the value of a game, but that's simply not the case. A PC port of God of War means that those without a PlayStation can finally play the game. It's critically-acclaimed and for good reason, meaning there's a significant portion of PC players who would download this game (read: purchase) day one. Unlikely as it is that there's a whole ton of PC Players who haven't played it, there's still someone who would be checking it out for themselves for the first time, and for those with a PC and a PS4, it's likely a worthwhile re-investment to check out the new PC features. And it's just as good for PS5 as it is PC.

God of War PS5

A sequel to God of War is not announced, but it's an inevitability already likely in development. Sony also has a firm stance on PS5 exclusives, not really supporting cross-gen games, and it's almost a guarantee that it's a PS5 game. As such, many PS4 owners will likely upgrade for it and the other exclusive sequels like Horizon: Forbidden West and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Keep this in mind: PC port players without a PS4 will likely invest in a PS5, as it is likely to be comparable (if not better) to the PC versions of the game. This encourages sales for those who haven't played it yet after playing it on PC, as the sequel would not likely come to PC for years after its release.

Even for those with a PS4 and a PC are more likely to upgrade after playing the PC port, as it would speak volumes as to what someone could expect of the next-gen version. In short, PC ports only expand sales opportunities and reaches a wide fanbase. Not necessarily that God of War needs it, but it's a wise tactic to keep the hype for Kratos as high as ever.

God of War is out now for PC. A PC port and a sequel are rumored to be in development.
