Updated June 4, 2022, by Raza Malik: The older God of War games are over-the-top action extravaganzas and some of the best titles on the PS2 and PS3. However, 2018's entry overhauled the franchise, adding RPG elements and making the combat more customizable. Because of that, players can create different types of builds for Kratos. With the latest God of War joining PS Plus, this is the perfect time to dive into the game. The best part is that each playthrough is different from the other, because players are creating different builds for Kratos. This allows God of War to feel new every time the player tries a new game. This guide has been expanded to include a few more of the best God of War builds.

9 Frost Build

  • Chest Item: Mythic Pauldrons of Protection
  • Wrist Item: Viken Bracers
  • Waist Item: Reaver Belt
  • Talisman: Charm of Infinite Stones
  • Blade Pommel: Ymir's Breath

This build is great for players who love close-up combat. Being centered around the Leviathan Axe, players can get through waves of enemies easily. As the majority of the game at the start revolves around close-quarter combat, the Frost Build will save players a lot of stress. As they create this build, they'll notice how much damage the ax is outputting.

This makes Kratos a formidable foe early on, and during the end-game, the Frost build helps players a lot more. The best part is that players can take down some harder bosses, like Rota who has been known to give people a hard time. On top of the Leviathan Axe becoming a threat, the players will see an increase in the AOE damage, allowing players to take down more enemies all at once.

8 Spartan Rage Build

God of war spartan rage
  • Chest Item: Brok's Royal Dwarven Breastplate
  • Wrist Item: Brok's Royal Dwarven Gauntlets
  • Waist Item: Brok's Royal Dwarven Waist guard
  • Talisman: Wing of the Fallen
  • Blade Pommel: Curved Grip of Restoration

This build shouldn't be overlooked because the Spartan Rage mechanic can get players out of tight situations, and building around it should be as important as the other builds on this list. This build allows the Spartan Rage meter to build up faster and allows players to be in that mode longer and make their attacks stronger. This effect is quite useful because the more the player uses the faster they can get through enemies, allowing them to progress faster.

On top of that, damage output increases every time this build is upgraded to the point where it is consistently damaging enemies even when they're not close to the enemy. Additionally, players building around this aspect should also increase the rage bar, because even early on when players are building the Spartan Rage Build, it'll cost less and when that meter is full and maxed out players can use it longer and more frequently. Of course, if players have the Brok's Royal Dwarven armor set, getting Spartan Rage is even faster because now it's thirty percent on top of what the build offers and that number increases when there are enchantments that are factored in.

7 The Strength Build

  • Chest Item: Ivaldi's Spaulders of Cursed Mist
  • Wrist Item: Ivaldi's Bracers of Cursed Mist
  • Waist Item: Smoldering Brimstone War Belt
  • Talisman: Horn of Heimdall
  • Blade Pommel: Grip of Tanngiost

This build is good really early, however as players progress more in the story it may get overshadowed by other builds, and if players and playing on a higher difficulty, the build won't have the same effectiveness. However, it shouldn't be ignored starting out because when fully upgraded, players' normal attacks will hit harder and the perks associated with this build can upgrade even further, making all the stats high.

When looking at enchantments, players should look for the ones that add to the strength stat because it can make the player a tank early on. If players are using the Ivaldi's Deadly Mist, which is a balanced armor set, this build will enhance most aspects of it. If players invest in this set throughout the game and build into the attacks, Kratos can become unstoppable really early on and that should help players because God of War is still a rather difficult game on the lower difficulties.

6 Luck Build

  • Chest Item: Try's Lost Unity Cuirass
  • Wrist Item: Try's Lost Unity Gauntlets
  • Waist Item: Bork's Royal Dwarven Waist Guard
  • Talisman: Hvergelmir Stone
  • Blade Pommel: Light War Handle

On the surface, players who create this build may not notice much of a change. However, if players are making a Luck Build, they'll get a lot of rewards after every fight. The Luck build focuses on rewarding players with high XP and Hacksilver, the currency used to buy items. As people get through the game, they'll need to farm XP quite a bit, and this build diminishes the amount of time that must be dedicated to grinding.

If players build the luck build early in God of War, they'll have an easier time in the long term. Since Kratos will be leveling up fast with this build, players should look for ways to enhance this build as well. The best way to do that is to invest in different types of armor and talismans. Since Luck Build allows players to buy things easier and in turn, the whole experience of God of War becomes tangible.

5 Runic Build

  • Chest Item: Sindri's Royal Breastplate
  • Wrist Item: Runic Forearm Bracers
  • Waist Item: Arcane Waist Guard
  • Talisman: Talisman of Unbound Potential
  • Blade Pommel: Blightbringer

Apart from the basic physical attacks that Kratos can do, these attacks have way more of a punch than an ax swing, which on its own can be powerful but enhancing it is always a smart move. The more the players spend points in this department, the more flexible the player becomes in terms of offensiveness. That can be used on both heavy and light attacks, so players can really play around with this build because it gives them the flexibility.

Not only physical attacks, but special attacks like elemental ones do better when players are using this build the right way. Since players have more in their arsenal when this build is created, they can be more diverse with how they fight. More options allow players to fight more freely, and turn, this build will help players get through the harder parts of God of War easier.

4 High Runic Damage Build

  • Chest item: Ivaldi's Spaulders of Cursed Mist
  • Wrist Item: Ivaldi's Bracers of Cursed Mist
  • Waist Item: Scaled Waist of Focus
  • Talisman: Talisman of Unbound Potential
  • Blade Pommel: Surtr's Grip of Flame

Unlike the other runic builds mentioned on this list, this one is a specific case that is designed to allow players to maximize their damage. Paying attention to Krato's runic attacks will go a long way, and newcomers to the game might not always give th combat system enough attention. This build makes gameplay very versatile and gives players tons of options. By being diverse with attacks, players won't need to fully rely on the physical aspects of the ax.

Players will notice the elemental characteristics of the ax have doubled, allowing them to lean more into those move sets. While this build won't shine much at the start, it's great to work towards. Near the end of God of War, players will get the iconic Blades of Chaos. When players have a high runic damage build, the Blades of Chaos become rather powerful.

3 Runic Cool Down Build

  • Chest Item: Blazing Magma Pauldrons
  • Wrist Item: Blazing Magma Wrappings
  • Waist Item: Blazing Magma War Belt
  • Talisman: Talisman of the Realms
  • Blade Pommel: Curved Recovery Handle

Runic attacks are just as important as physical ones as they make physical attacks better. It's good for players to know that they have that option. While having a build based around the runic aspect of the God of War it wouldn't hurt to try to build it around how much players can use it. Building a runic build centered around the frequency of use is better because the attacks will hit hard and more often.

With this build, players should focus on enhancing the Luck department because with a moderately high Luck level the chances of those attacks hitting are higher. The more players can use the runic attacks the better because they do area damage and it makes fighting a lot easier, and if players are playing on a higher difficulty, doing this early will pay off as the player progress through the story. So building around this build is always a good idea.

2 Mixed Armor Build

God of war kratos about the face an enemy
  • Chest Item: Sindri's Royal Breastplate
  • Wrist Item: Gauntlet of the Ancients
  • Waist Item: Plated Volunder Waist Guard
  • Talisman: Talisman of Resolute Might
  • Blade Pommel: Curved Grip of Fury

This build can be a hit or miss depending on how the player builds it, but when it's built right players can become really strong. In the end game this pays off but for the first half of God of War players should focus on this type of build if they want to maximize the effectiveness. This build gets stronger as the player progresses and gets new armor sets so because of that at the start of the build players should look into the Luck stat and create the build around that.

If players have Sindri's Royal Dwarven Chest, this build becomes kind of unfair with enemies that have faced the player, because now players have a chest armor that can't take damage and has high cooldown for the runic attacks which makes slaying enemies a breeze. However, in order for players to get the high cooldown perk with this build, they should focus on Cooldown after they've maxed out Luck. This build has a variety of uses, for players playing on a higher difficulty, this build should be considered because it can absorb more attacks than most other builds better.

1 Health Build

god of war kratos holding a helmet Cropped
  • Chest Item: Ivaldi's Pauldrons of Deadly Mist
  • Wrist Item: Ivaldi's Gautlents of Deadly Mist
  • Waist Item: Ivaldi's Warbelt of Deadly Mist
  • Talisman: Talisman of Concentrated Vitality
  • Blade Pommel: Grips of Volunder

The latest God of War game is rather difficult, even on the easier settings. This means players will be dying a lot more than previous entries in the franchise, which can get frustrating. The best way for players to combat this is to invest in a health build. This allows players to take on more damage, in turn, allows them to fight more aggressively. Not only does the health build keeps players alive longer, but it also helps the perks that give more health.

Pairing this build with the Ivaldi's Cursed Mist armor enhances all the health perks the players have built. This armor can be found in the early game, so players who stumble upon or craft this set will enjoy it. Because Kratos will be taking a lot of hits, the constant health regeneration that the armor gives will make a world of difference. However, at the start, it's a good idea for players to create a health build, giving players a better chance for survival. If players are playing on the harder difficulties, then this build will more impactful.

God of War is available on PC and PS4.
