2018’s God of War was a pretty big game even with its traditionally linear storyline. As big as it is, the game’s central hub in Midgard teased even more areas that Kratos and Atreus could explore in the next God of War game. Kratos is able to access various realms via the Lake of Nine, but of the nine realms, the player is only able to visit six of them (including Midgard). The game’s explanation for the other three areas being blocked off is that Odin has restricted it.
Although God of War 2 for PS5 hasn’t been confirmed yet, there is little doubt that the game is being developed, especially after the critical and commercial success of the 2018 game (which also hints at a sequel at the end of it). Developer Sony Santa Monica decided to hold off on including Odin in the original game as a featured character, which could only mean that the studio wants to save the big battle with the Norse Allfather for a later game. Whenever the sequel to God of War comes out, it’s likely to include these previously locked areas and potentially more due to or perhaps in spite of Odin.
Asgard
Asgard might be the most significant realm that Kratos and Atreus could visit. It’s home to the Aesir and is ruled by Odin, making it the likeliest destination for Kratos in the sequel (unless the developers push this realm to a third game). It’s also where Valhalla is located which is also going to be a significant destination for Kratos at some point. Considering how Odin farms his best warriors through Valhalla, it’s possible Kratos will have to go through here before facing Odin. It’s also possible that the enemies that Kratos dealt with in GoW will come back to face him again in Valhalla.
Vanaheim
The former queen of the Valkyries, Freya, was one of the main characters in God of War and is a direct link to both Odin and her former realm of residence, Vanaheim. The realm is home to the Vanir, who have been at war with the Aesir for centuries, which is one of the reasons why the marriage between Odin and Freya happened. Due to the fact that Freya isn’t on good terms with Odin during the events of the game, Odin sealed off Vanaheim partly out of spite to her. Kratos might have to visit the Vanir, especially if Freya becomes an enemy in GoW 2.
Svartalfheim
Svartalfheim, otherwise known as Nidavellir, is home to the dwarves (which include the Huldra brothers, Brok and Sindri) and Odin had sealed off access to this realm in order to prevent the Vanir from teaming up with them. If Brok and Sindri, creators of the Leviathan axe, end up going back for whatever reason, it’s possible that Kratos has to visit them in their home realm in order to upgrade his equipment further. Additionally, Kratos and Atreus still have the ring with Andvari the dwarf’s soul in it so maybe there is a way to extract him from the ring back on Svartalfheim.
Other Areas for God of War 2
Even though the three locked realms in GoW could provide hours of content each in a sequel, there are still a bunch of other places that weren’t explored in the game that could also be of some significance to the story. Kratos and Atreus could pass by the island of Lyngvi on Lake Amsvartnir where the creature Fenrir is bound. Fenrir has a connection to Tyr, the Norse god of war, whom Odin had imprisoned for his part in helping the giants of Jotunheim. Kratos could also visit Tyr in his prison in order to bust him out and have a gods of war tag team match against Odin and Thor.
Other notable places in Norse mythos that Kratos could potentially pass by in a sequel include Eljudnir (the palace of Hel in Niflheim), Folkvangr (the field where half of fallen warriors are received, the other half going to Odin), and Gimli (the post-Ragnarok court of the gods). Of course, these are all guesses, but they’re also good places for a video game to recreate. God of War 2 will most likely visit some of the aforementioned places if not all of them, whenever it releases on PS5.
