God of War series has been going on for a long time, and it started back on the PlayStation 2 back in 2005. Since then, it's had titles out for the PlayStation Portable and some even for the mobile market, as well as the heavy hitters on the PlayStation consoles.

The latest title God of War for the PlayStation 4, was critically acclaimed but it changed the God of War formula quite a lot, from what fans initially loved about the series. The fast-paced hack and slash action was gone and transformed into a slower but more powerful rendition of it. With this change, out of all the games, what are the best weapons that Kratos can wield to destroy his enemies with ease?

10 Spear of Destiny

This weapon is from God of War 2 and can be obtained from killing the Dark Rider, the leader of the Griffin Riders, who also wields the Spear of Destiny. Kratos kills him by impaling him and his dark Griffin with his own weapon, and they plummet to the ground. Later on, the corpse of this mount is found, but it's rider body nowhere to be seen and Kratos recovers the Spear of Destiny.

This weapon has amazing reach and attacks very quickly, so it's perfect for encounters when trying to keep foes at bay. But, as well as that, it also fires crystal shards and drops magical bombs. A fascinating weapon, indeed.

9 Nemesis Whip

This weapon is from God of War 3 and is acquired by giving the Omphalos Stone to Hephaestus, which is obtained by killing the titan Cronos, and that is no easy feat in itself. But Hephaestus sneakily had initially been planning to use this weapon to murder the Spartan.

The Nemesis Whip is a pair of triple blades that are chained together; however, it might be similar to the Blades of Chaos your original equipment, so using this weapon might be easily forgotten. Yet, this weapon has the power to conduct electricity, very much like his father.

8 Leviathan Axe

This weapon is the iconic weapon from the latest title in the series, God of War for the PlayStation 4. Kratos has this weapon from the get-go as it was given to him by his second wife Faye, before she died, as it was hers. This legendary weapon was crafted by two dwarves, Brok and Sindri, to counter Thor's, Mjölnir Hammer.

The Leviathan Axe is a frost based weapon, so it can freeze enemies, as well as be thrown at distant foes, but most importantly of all, it can be recalled back to the user, very much like the hammer of Thor. Having Kratos wield something slower, truly shows off his raw strength to the fullest.

7 Blades of Chaos

Ah, the Blades of Chaos, these are the Spartan Kratos' most iconic weapon to date. Seeing Kratos use these fast weapons in combat, almost resembles that of a dance, but dancing with these only causes death and destruction in his wake. These were given to him by the God of War, Ares, as a symbol of his pledge. These blades were forged in the Underworld and are imbued with fire.

The chains attached to the Blades of Chaos are permanently seared onto the forearms of the wielder, as a reminder of their oath to Ares. And can only be removed by the God of War himself or by the wielders servitude coming to an end. However, due to the story, these get replaced by other Blades but are more or less the same. Upon Kratos eventually becoming the God of War, he vowed never to use these Blades of Chaos again.

6 Nemean Cestus

Hercules originally wielded Nemean Cestus in God of War 3. It's a chained fist weapon, resembling lion gauntlets, but it's one of his slower ones at that. He traded the speed and dance like of his moves into more elaborate and impressive brutal combos.

This weapon is acquired by pummelling your half brother to death with his own arsenal, the Nemean Cestus. That's right, the mighty Hercules felled. This weapon is extremely powerful and is the only weapon capable of destroying Onyx, which is a type of rock that frequently appears in God of War 3.

5 Arms of Sparta

This weapon, the Arms of Sparta, is the only other weapon where Kratos will use a shield. This weapon - the spear, and shield is the pride of the Spartan army and is what Kratos originally wielded before his service to Ares.

The Arms of Sparta are only in the PlayStation Portable title God of War: Ghosts of Sparta, where Kratos gave these to the Last Spartan before his departure, and upon his return, the Arms of Sparta were gifted back to him. This spear handles like the Spear of Destiny, but when equipped with a shield and the strength of a god. It allows him to charge forward, while also blocking.

4 Claws of Hades

This weapon was Hades' chosen weapon to use in battle, as during both Great Wars, Hades could be seen wielding this hooked set of chains. Of course, this weapon is acquired by killing the brother of Zeus, Hades, in God of War 3.

Very much like the Blades of Chaos, but instead of fire, this weapon can be used to summon the souls of the Undead, which means that Kratos can rip the souls out of his foes and use them to attack other enemies. Just like Hades used to do, even to Gods.

3 Blade of Artemis

Now this weapon was more mighty than the Blades of Chaos; however, the trade-off was it's much much slower. This weapon takes two hands to wield and was given to Kratos by Artemus, who is Goddess of the Hunt. The Blade of Artemis was once used to slay a Titan, as this massive blade is capable of piercing armor.

In God of War: Betrayal, he uses this blade even after becoming the new God of War. However, this is the last you'll see of this weapon, as it's most likely Artemis took back the blade after Kratos fulfilled his vengeance.

2 Barbarians Hammer

This massive hammer was wielded by the Alrik, the Barbarian King, in God of War 2. And like most weapons from the God of War series, it is taken from the corpse of Alrik once he has been killed.

This weapon is one of the slower weapons of the series, but it is also one of the most powerful, second only to one other. Oddly enough, it has the power to summon up Cursed Souls from the Underworld, very much like the Claws of Hades from God of War 3.

1 Blade of Olympus

The Blade of Olympus is one of three tools (along with Pandora's Box and Gauntlet of Zeus) that has the power to harm or even kill the Gods. This godly weapon was magically forged from the heavens and the earth by no other than Zeus to end the Great War by banishing all Titans to Tartarus.

In God of War 2, Zeus tricked Kratos by having him give up all his powers to the Blade of Olympus, under the pretense he can wield all of its power it to kill all Gods who oppose him. Sadly this sword is mostly for plot purposes only. However, when starting a new game on Bonus Play, this blade can be used throughout the entire game, where it can be leveled up like other weapons, to increase its power and learn new abilities.
