Highlights

  • God of War's Norse saga features intense boss fights, with Valkyrie Queens Sigrun and Gna as standout challenges.
  • Santa Monica Studio faces the challenge of raising the bar for future boss fights in the series.
  • Speculation suggests a potential move to a new realm, but any pantheon must include equally formidable foes.

God of War has become well known for its brutal combat, and the Norse saga took boss fights to even greater heights. Throughout the franchise's time in the Norse realm, God of War has put players through the wringer with boss encounters, and it's hard to imagine how Santa Monica Studio will be able to increase the intensity.

Although God of War 2018 and God of War Ragnarok have plenty of sweat-inducing moments, two bosses featured in the Norse saga will be particularly hard to top in future games. Valkyrie Queens Sigrun and Gna proved to be some of the most intimidating adversaries to face throughout both games, and the next God of War has a lot to live up to thanks to these fights.

The Next God of War Has Its Work Cut Out for It With Boss Fights

Facing Sigrun and Gna

Sigrun and Gna may be optional bosses in the recent God of War games, but that doesn't mean they aren't some of the most harrowing encounters players can experience in the series. In 2018's God of War, running into a Valkyrie for the first time is shocking enough, but once all the Valkyries are defeated, Sigrun's fight can finally be unlocked, and it's a wild ride. Players have to be on their A-game if they wish to survive going head-to-head with Sigrun, and it seemed impossible for God of War Ragnarok to top the boss fight.

However, Gna's introduction in God of War Ragnarok provided another heart-racing boss battle that once again put players' skills to the ultimate test. Since the release of both games, players have managed to get some seriously impressive wins in a short amount of time, but the two Valkyrie Queens are still some of the most insane encounters one can face in the Norse games.

God of War Raising the Bar

The future of God of War is unknown at the moment, as Santa Monica Studio hasn't officially confirmed what the next chapter will hold. If the franchise wants to raise the bar with these optional boss fights, the aforementioned developer has an uphill battle to face. Santa Monica Studio knocked it out of the park with these two characters and their fighting mechanics. Sigrun and Gna are blindingly fast and each hit takes a significant portion off Kratos' health bar.

There has been speculation suggesting that God of War will move to a new realm with a fresh pantheon of gods, and if this is the case, the pantheon should include mythical beings that pack just as much of a punch as the Valkyrie. God of War's Norse saga nailed its interpretation of the Valkyrie and their fierceness, so it may be hard to find a worthy follow-up. Although the Norse era of God of War has been a great exploration of a fascinating pantheon, it has also backed itself into a corner with its next set of enemies. The defeat of Odin, fighting Valkyrie Queens, and killing Heimdall were just a few of the many incredible fights this Norse era has offered, and meeting the bar this chapter has raised will be a challenge.

As Kratos' time in the Norse realm seemingly comes to a close, God of War is at a crossroads. Santa Monica Studios could surprise everyone and return for another Norse chapter, but all the biggest threats have been dealt with, so that's unlikely. If the franchise chooses to explore Egyptian or Aztec gods, as theories have suggested, these potential pantheons will have to go bolder than before. Although this is a tall order, Santa Monica Studio has what it takes to make a new God of War saga even better.
