Every God Of War Game, Ranked

One of PlayStation's flagship franchises, Santa Monica Studio's God of War has produced plenty of great games. Naturally, some are better than others.

Considering the main setting of the series is rooted in mythology, there are dozens upon dozens of characters in every game of the series, and most of them are great at serving their purpose. This might make it difficult for some of the more underrated characters to stand out, which is a shame as this series is littered with incredible characters. Some of the best that don't get talked about enough are discussed below.

5 Ares

The Architect of Kratos' Suffering

Ares in God of War 2005
  • Debut Game:God of War (2005)

Ares is an incredible villain and the architect of most of the terror that befalls Kratos and Athens during the series. Ares is a conniving planner who plots to overthrow Zeus and seize control of Olympus. He destroys Sparta, kidnapping Kratos' baby brother out of fear the brother would destroy Olympus. Ares also disowns his own son in his lust for power.

The manipulative God of War, with Kratos in his servitude, plans to use him to destroy Olympus. To this end, he created the blood test for Kratos and had him kill his own wife and child when consumed by bloodlust. Ares is an incredible villain, and his boss fight was one of the best on any platform at the time. He's underrated in the franchise due to his early departure but his impact cannot be overstated.

4 Poseidon

An Epic Boss That Sets The Tone

  • Debut Game:God of War (2005)

Poseidon isn't a big player in Olympus in the God of War series, he only has a few appearances, but he makes a memorable impact. Poseidon is shown to be a powerful warrior, vital in the war against the Titans, bringing down Atlas, and helping Zeus defeat Chronos.

5 Enemy Types That Should Return in God of War Ragnarok's Half-Sequel

God of War Ragnarok featured a number of high-quality enemies, and at least some of them should make a return in the game's rumored half-sequel.

His real claim to fame, however, is the incredible boss fight in God of War 3. Poseidon is shown to be a formidable foe, dealing with titans with ease. It took both Kratos and Gaia to coordinate their attack to beat him. While his appearance was minor, Poseidon still stands out as one of the best and most underrated boss fights in the PS3 era.

3 Deimos

The Sibling Struck With Tragedy

  • Debut Game:God of War (2005)

Deimos was Kratos' brother and a major character in God of War: Ghost of Sparta on the PSP. Deimos was kidnapped by Ares and Athena out of fear of a prophecy. Consequently, he was tortured in the Domain of Death by Thanatos, holding out hope his brother would someday rescue him.

When Kratos finally found Deimos, Deimos was enraged at his older brother for deserting him. This led to one of the best fights in God of War: Ascension, following which the two brothers allied to fight against Thanatos, with Kratos vowing to never leave his brother's side again. Unfortunately, Deimos meets his demise by the end of the game. Deimos is a great character. He serves as a solid foil to Kratos, being the more measured and calm brother. His story is also one of tragedy and does a great job of vilifying Ares

and the other Gods of Olympus. The limited time Deimos had, and his few interactions with Kratos are enough to make him one of the best characters introduced in the PSP games.

2 Thanatos

A Haunting Foe

Thanatos GoW Cropped
  • Debut Game:God of War: Ghost of Sparta (2010)

Thanatos is the most underrated villain in the series. The God of Death is wicked and menacing and has the perfect character design and voice acting to compliment his reputation. He had been tormenting Deimos for the entirety of Kratos's teen and adult life, and eventually takes his life brutally near the climax of God of War: Ghost of Sparta.

These are some of the hardest games in the God of War franchise that are guaranteed to give players a tough time.

Thanatos is wicked and constantly taunts and goads his adversaries. He has no fear of the Gods and openly berates them. His boss fight is really fun due to his two phases. Be it the first, reminiscent of the Grim Reaper with cobalt wings, or his second as a terrifying dragon.

1 Orkos

A Selfless Ally

kratos and orkos
  • Debut Game:God of War: Ascension (2013)

Orkos is a demi-god and the son of Ares. He was cast aside for being too weak but then found his place at the side of the furies. Orkos' role as an Oath-Keeper keeps him involved in Kratos' story in God of War Ascension, he is shown to be respectful of his mother, and whilst disappointed in Ares for abandoning him, he is never vengeful or vindictive.

Seeing Kratos' plight firsthand, he becomes a steadfast ally and has the unique honor of being one of the few characters in the God of War series Kratos doesn't hate, or isn't constantly enraged at. His selfless sacrifice at the end of the game only marks his story with more tragedy. Orkos was a sympathetic character and it would be great to see him somehow come back if the series has any future installments.
