The announcement of the PlayStation Showcase sent waves throughout the community, especially as it promised to show off upcoming holiday games and beyond. The keyword here is “beyond,” as many took this to mean big 2022 games like God of War’s upcoming sequel, as well as Horizon Forbidden West and potentially more.

It quickly became no secret that Kratos and Atreus would be there thanks to a reliable leak of God of War’s presence. And the showcase didn’t disappoint, showcasing a new trailer for the upcoming and now officially titled God of War Ragnarok.

The trailer opens with Atreus approaching Kratos in a cave, discussing the prophecy of Ragnarok and his identity as Loki. He seems to want to help people and has matured clearly, as he appears to be a few years older. He even asks Kratos at one point if war with Asgard is what his mother wanted, to which Kratos gets angry. Overall, the trailer seems to show them on a quest for a very important ally: the Norse God of War, Tyr.

Beyond that, the trailer shows Kratos and Atreus in combat, as well as riding dogsleds. Overall, it's as impressive as many hoped, and while no word of God of War Ragnarok's release date is mentioned, things seem to bode well for 2022. Outside the trailer, though, Santa Monica Studio would go on to confirm a few more details for the upcoming game.

For example, while it is no stretch of the imagination, the studio confirms that Thor and Frey operate as the main antagonists of this title. That leaves a big question mark for Odin, but that also bodes well for an eventual third game. Playing as Kratos and going up against Thor is promising enough in and of itself. Furthermore, "Atreus' true heritage" is a big part of the game, hinted at in the trailer when Atreus asks who Loki is.

The game will also feature new runes and abilities, likely for both God of War Ragnarok's Kratos and Atreus, and players will be able to visit all 9 realms in the game. Indeed, while fans have been waiting for quite some time on this trailer and there are still a ton of questions, it's hard to imagine how its first official showing could have been any better.
