Millions have played the games on the PlayStation and now the wildly popular franchise God of War could be coming to the small screen. Amazon Prime Video is reportedly negotiating with Sony to obtain the rights for a live-action television series based on the games. While no deal has been confirmed yet, if it were to be finalized, the God of War series would join a long list of game adaptations that are currently in production.

The God of War games make up PlayStation’s flagship action-adventure franchise. News of a potential series based on the games has been welcomed by fans world over. Speculations over who could be cast to play the protagonist Kratos have already begun. Even though the first God of War game released in 2005 for the PlayStation 2, fans expect a potential series to focus on the Norse era, which was introduced in the reboot in 2018. It remains to be seen what path the producers would take.

The God of War series is being looked at as an opportunity to bring the popular franchise to television. Deadline reports that the adaptation is being eyed by The Expanse creators and executive producers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, along with The Wheel of Time producer Rafe Judkins. If the series got the confirmation, it would be produced under the banner of Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions, as they collaborate on all content based on PlayStation games.

God of War Kratos and Atreus

The God of War games focus on the journey of Kratos, a Spartan soldier who goes up against Greek gods to seek revenge for his slain family. The original trilogy focused a lot on Greek mythology, with Kratos eventually becoming the Greek God of War after defeating Ares. However, the 2018 reboot sees him trying to build a new life in Scandanavia along with his son Atreus. While the goal sounds simple, Kratos is on a mission to scatter his wife's ashes as she wished, and there are many twists along the way.

The 2018 God of War reboot is considered one of the best PlayStation exclusives and its popularity was through the roof upon release. As of August 2021, the game has sold 19.5 million copies, based on official figures released by Sony. While there are currently seven games in the God of War series, the sequel to the extremely popular 2018 game, God of War Ragnarök, is scheduled to release later this year for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. With the epic reveal at the end of God of War about Kratos’ son Atreus, it should be interesting to see where the sequel takes the duo.

God of War is being considered for production.
