God of War Ragnarok will be getting brand-new, free DLC on Tuesday, December 12 called God of War Ragnarok Valhalla. God of War Ragnarok had a major presence at The Game Awards 2022, with the action adventure game from Sony Santa Monica taking home multiple awards at the event.
God of War Ragnarok didn't win the coveted Game of the Year prize at The Game Awards 2022, but it still managed to take home six awards. Going into The Game Awards 2023, fans already knew that God of War Ragnarok would have some kind of representation, as it was confirmed before the show that Kratos actor Christopher Judge would be presenting. However, it's safe to say that fans didn't expect any kind of announcement for God of War Ragnarok at the event.
God of War Ragnarok Proved How Influential One Feature is for the Franchise Moving Forward
The God of War franchise has enjoyed many groundbreaking titles, but Ragnarok pointed the series in a whole new direction to explore in the future.
That's why many Game Awards 2023 viewers were shocked to see the reveal trailer for God of War Ragnarok Valhalla, completely free DLC that's releasing on Tuesday, December 12 for PS4 and PS5. The God of War Ragnarok Valhalla DLC will have roguelike elements and promises to be an "emotional, unexpected, and fun new twist" on God of War Ragnarok, according to Game Awards host Geoff Keighley. The brief trailer for the DLC showed Kratos and Mimir battling some unique-looking monsters, including a cyclops, a callback to the God of War games based on Greek mythology.

Many are likely surprised at PlayStation's decision to release God of War Ragnarok Valhalla for free. After all, God of War Ragnarok was a massive sale success, and so it's safe to say that many fans of the franchise would be more than willing to buy premium DLC for the game. Regardless, the free DLC should be a good reason for God of War fans to return to Ragnarok next week, and it will be exciting to see what story developments the new DLC may have in store.
There have been rumblings about a smaller-scale God of War game to serve as a stop-gap between Ragnarok and the next full-sized entry in the series. It's unclear if this free God of War Ragnarok DLC is that rumored project, or if this is something completely unrelated. If that other God of War project exists, one has to wonder when exactly it will be announced. For now, fans can look forward to God of War Ragnarok Valhalla releasing on December 12.
