Thor is one of the main characters in God of War Ragnarok. As his sons were two of the antagonists that players fought in the previous installment, and he was quickly seen at the end of it, fans anticipated learning about the role he would have in the newest entry in the series. As many expected, Thor proved to be one of the best bosses that players fought against in God of War Ragnarok.

Besides being a great boss and antagonist, there were also times in the game when players had to work with Thor. Being able to see him from multiple perspectives resulted in some of the best moments in God of War Ragnarok revolving around the God of Thunder.

Thor's Introduction and First Battle in God of War Ragnarok

Kratos vs Thor

One of Thor's best moments in God of War Ragnarok was his introduction. He and Odin went to Kratos' home and gave the God of War and Atreus a peace offering. Thor didn't actually want to make peace with Kratos and Loki, as he hoped to avenge the deaths of his sons, but he was ordered by the All-Father not to fight unless they refused to accept the proposal. Luckily for the God of Thunder, that's exactly what Kratos did, causing the two of them to fight in the first battle against Thor in God of War Ragnarok.

Despite this boss battle taking place so early in the game, it was one of the best bosses that players came across in the entire series. The best part of it was when players seemingly die, but Thor refuses to end the fight there, electrocuting Kratos and continuing the battle. At the end of their encounter, Kratos began using his full strength, which Thor wanted to see for himself. Not wanting to kill the God of War just yet, Thor decided to leave the battlefield and waited to cross paths with his enemy again. While there are parallels between Thor and Baldur's boss fights, the encounter remains unique and compelling.

He Chose Sif Over Odin

Sif and Thor in God of War Ragnarok

While Thor and Kratos fought each other at the beginning of the game, Odin tried to convince Atreus to go to Asgard and work with him. Loki initially refused, but changed his mind throughout the game and eventually helped the All-Father locate pieces of a mask, even though Odin's obsession with the mask was not explained. Thor and Atreus joined forces to find one of these pieces. When they found the last piece that Odin needed, Atreus almost died obtaining it, but Thor came to his rescue. However, Thor would quickly regret his decision.

As soon as Thor and Loki obtained all the pieces of the mask, Odin and Sif teleported to them. While the All-Father was delighted that the mask was whole, Sif was outraged that Atreus wasn't dead. She pleaded with Thor to stop following Odin's orders and avenge their sons, causing Thor to turn his hammer onto Loki. While Atreus was able to escape before he was harmed, this was a great moment for Thor, as he finally decided to do what he wanted and opposed the All-Father's orders, which made Sif's role in God of War Ragnarok so important.

Thor Died For The Sake Of His Daughter

God of War Ragnarok Kratos vs Thor-1

During Atreus' time in Asgard, he became friends with Thor's daughter, Thrud. She decided to join forces with Loki and Kratos during the battle between the Asgardians and the God of War's army. Thor saw Thrud with his enemies and suspected the worst, causing him to attack Kratos. Kratos ended up defeating Thor, but refused to kill him. Kratos decided to offer Thor peace for the sake of Loki and Thrud, and Thor accepted it.

Unfortunately, the All-Father no longer cared to have peace and was outraged when he discovered that Thor hadn't killed Kratos. For not following his orders, Odin killed Thor. As the God of Thunder dematerialized, Thrud saw him one last time. She tried to grab the hammer that Thor left behind, but the All-Father held onto it first and knocked her away. He then fought Kratos, Atreus, and Freya, who managed to defeat him, avenging the God of Thunder. This made for a great boss fight against Odin in God of War Ragnarok, even though Thor's importance was felt even after his death.

God of War Ragnarok is available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
