Even though it was never officially confirmed as such, many have referred to Sony's upcoming God of War sequel as God of War: Ragnarok, since it's widely assumed that said sequel will focus on Ragnarok, the great battle from Norse myth that led to many of the gods being killed and the world destroyed. Or, at the very least, Ragnarok will play an important part in the story.

The game itself was officially announced last year with a brief teaser trailer, which only featured a logo, a release date of 2021, and the phrase "Ragnarok is coming," which only further led credence to the presumed title. Then, in a recent investor report, people spotted on a slide highlight the PlayStation 5's post-launch offerings, a logo that blatantly read God of War: Ragnarok.

Word quickly spread that this was the game's official name. However, reports began to emerge that the logo in the report wasn't officially made by Sony and was fan-made. Sony itself hasn't commented on the logo or title, but if one checks the report now, the Ragnarok logo is gone and replaced with a far more generic logo. In fact, it's just the logo for the first God of War, but black.

Sony investor report fan made

This doesn't necessarily mean that the sequel's title isn't God of War: Ragnarok. It's possible that whoever put the logo in the report in the first place simply wasn't aware that Sony didn't make it and mistook it for being genuine. Cory Barlog, who directed the first game, posted a reaction GIF following the original logo discovery that could suggest annoyance at the game's name being revealed ahead of an official reveal.

There hasn't been any news concerning the sequel since that initial teaser. The only thing fans really know about it is that it will launch for the PlayStation 5. Given the lack of news, it seems possible that it won't meet its 2021 release date. There was even talk of God of War: Ragnarok being delayed internally and Sony waiting to confirm this later in the year.

Fans have been speculating about the sequel's story since the first game released in 2018. Theories such as what will be in store for Kratos and his son Atreus, the true motivations of Faye, and what role Thor will play have circulated regularly. Thor is easily among the most recognized Norse gods, and considering he was completely absent from the first game save for the true ending, he's expected to be a major character in the sequel, possibly an antagonist.

The God of War sequel is in development for PlayStation 5.
