God of War Ragnarok has surpassed a massive and impressive sales milestone. Released in November 2022, God of War Ragnarok became an instant hit as fans and critics flocked to check out the final chapter in the sequel series that began with 2018’s God of War. Christopher Judge, the actor who performed the voice and motion capture for series mainstay Kratos, won the 2022 Game Award for Best Performance.

2018’s God of War sold over 5 million units within a month of release in April 2018 and over 23 million by November 2022. Its sales numbers were only eclipsed by Marvel’s Spider-Man, making God of War the second highest-selling PS4 game ever, and the highest-selling game in the long-running God of War series. 2018’s God of War introduced Kratos and his son Atreus into the world of Norse mythology. His iconic Blades of Chaos were swapped out for the Leviathan Axe, a weapon crafted by the same smiths who forged Thor’s hammer Mjolnir.

The last sales figures reported by Sony had God of War Ragnarok sitting nicely at 5.1 million units sold in its launch week of November 2022. That number has more than doubled since with the game now having sold over 11 million units worldwide just over three months after release. This makes God of War Ragnarok the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios title ever. Developer Santa Monica Studio celebrated the milestone with a tweet thanking fans for the game's massive success.

Ragnarok was one of the best-selling games of 2022, alongside other gaming juggernauts such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and Elden Ring. While some critics and fans felt the sequel was a little too similar to its 2018 predecessor, the slightly more muted reaction has not slowed sales or prevented fans from expressing their deep admiration for the God of War series and its long legacy.

The numbers are all the more impressive considering God of War Ragnarok is the ninth game in a series that spans three decades and five PlayStation consoles, including two titles released on Sony’s short-lived yet beloved PSP handheld gaming system. Ragnarok's sales milestone is a testament to Sony-owned Santa Monica Studios' vision of a continuation of the story that saw an aging Kratos reckoning with the demons of his past while trying to prevent his son from following in his path, regardless of what fate dictates.

God of War Ragnarok is available now on PS4 and PS5.
