One fan of Sony’s God of War: Ragnarok recently showed off his crafting skills by creating a detailed replica of Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. Thor is the secondary antagonist in God of War: Ragnarok and the one who gained the most attention in the lead-up to the game’s release. While Kratos never wielded it himself, Mjolnir is nevertheless one of the most iconic weapons in the game.

Santa Monica Studio and Sony Interactive Entertainment released God of War: Ragnarok for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on November 9th. The game continues the story of Kratos and his teenage son Atreus as they travel the realms of Norse Mythology to find the war god Tyr and overthrow Odin’s rule. The game proved to be an overwhelming hit and critical darling, with the PS5 version earning an impressive 94 on Metacritic. God of War: Ragnarok also won six awards at the 2022 Game Awards, including Best Narrative, and was nominated for Game of The Year.

Reddit user AltruisticSpecific15, also known as Eile, recently created a life-sized replica of Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, and shared it on the God of War: Ragnarok subreddit. Eile said they made it to give as a Christmas present. They didn’t reveal who they made the hammer for, but whoever it is must be a pretty big God of War: Ragnarok fan. It’s also an impressive piece of handy work that recreates many of the details present in the game, and God of War: Ragnarok fans were very impressed when Eile shared it on the subreddit.

Mjolnir is one of the most iconic weapons in God of War: Ragnarok and is rivaled only by Kratos’ Leviathan Axe as one of the most powerful weapons in the Nine Realms. While Santa Monica Studios applied its own interpretations of many parts of Norse mythology, Ragnarok’s version of Mjolnir stands out for how closely it matches some ancient depictions of the weapon, including its short handle and the unusual shape of its head.

Eile made the hammer primarily out of painted EVA over the course of about 12-15 hours. The fine detailing on the hilt and hammerhead is particularly impressive, as are the gold bands curling up from the grip. The head looks a bit more like stone than metal, but it still looks great and is an extremely impressive example of fan-made costume weaponry.

Eile’s post on the God of War: Ragnarok subreddit did not go into much detail about the actual assembly process. However, they did leave a comment linking to an image gallery showing some of the steps in making it. And while the craftsmanship might be challenging to match, the photos may be a helpful guide to anyone thinking about making one of their own.

God of War: Ragnarok is available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
