The massively successful launch of God of War Ragnarok can at least partially be credited to the incredible attention to detail that went into the making of Santa Monica Studio's latest hit. Among other things, the California-based developer's meticulous approach to game creation is underlined by the sheer volume of God of War Ragnarok Easter eggs which are now being discovered. One such particularly notable moment surfaced online earlier this week after one player decided to annoy Ratatoskr by repeatedly ringing his summoning bell using Kratos's Leviathan Axe, with hilarious results.
Released on PlayStation consoles this Wednesday, God of War Ragnarok already won critical acclaim and fan adoration, with Santa Monica Studio thus delivering yet another strong game-of-the-year contender which cleanly rounds out Sony's 2022 exclusive lineup. The chronologically ninth game in the long-running franchise concludes the story of the 2018 God of War which replaced the series' signature Greek mythology setting with one rooted in Norse folklore. The latter describes Ratatoskr as a magical messenger squirrel who delivers communications between the top and bottom of Yggdrasil, the mythical world tree.
While the God of War reboot already contained a "Bitter Squirrel" Runic Summon ability that allowed players to conjure up a fairly normal-looking squirrel with a cheeky attitude—all in reference to Ratatoskr—voiced by Troy Baker, God of War Ragnarok used Ratatoskr's mythology to deliver a more fleshed-out character with a less conventional, anthropoid-like character model. This time around, the revised character was also voiced by famous YouTuber and voice actor SungWon "ProZD" Cho, though Baker still has a few small cameos as Bitter Squirrel. That said, arguably the most hilarious lines were given to Cho, and the only way to hear them is to keep ringing Ratatoskr's summoning bell, as Reddit user -flower_boy- discovered earlier this week.
While the new game's narrative is as serious as the storytelling from the previous installments in the franchise, many of the series' fans still like to have some harmless fun with its lore even beyond enjoying its intentionally humorous Easter eggs. For example, one fan recently pointed out a number of hilarious similarities between Ragnarok and Shrek, while another decided to celebrate the game's overwhelmingly positive reviews with a funny animation made using Media Molecule's PlayStation-exclusive creation engine Dreams.
As it's been less than a week since God of War Ragnarok released, players are likely to keep discovering more Easter eggs from the game. And it will be interesting to see if any more of them are as hilarious as this one involving Ratatoskr.
