SPOILER WARNING: PLEASE NOTE THIS GUIDE CONTAINS POTENTIAL SPOILERS FOR GOW RAGNAROK.God of War Ragnarok always ensures that there are at least two characters players are in charge of: the main playable character, as well as a companion. While many combat options are tied to the main character, companions like Atreus are important in God of War Ragnarok. Using ranged attacks and abilities to complement Kratos' onslaught goes a long way in making the combat much more enjoyable.

However, this companion system is largely expanded in God of War Ragnarok, with players stepping into more shoes than just Kratos and having more companions than just Atreus. For those curious as to who will join them on this journey, this guide offers the answer to that question, but once again be warned, there are spoilers here.

God of War Ragnarok Playable Characters

atreus behind kratos

There are two major playable characters in God of War Ragnarok. Kratos is the most obvious and first. Players will spend most of their time as Kratos, except for when story missions boot players in the shoes of the second character: Atreus. Atreus' move set remains largely the same as when he is a companion, save for players having more control over his runic attacks, and Atreus has a Spartan Rage meter just like his father.

God of War Ragnarok Atreus

While players only have control over two main characters, they will be joined by a plethora of companions. These characters join the main character in combat, can engage on their own, but also otherwise have special abilities and attacks that players must leverage in combat too. However, it should be noted that there are a couple of companions who cannot be controlled by the player. These companions may or may not join the player in combat, but they will have no command inputs in God of War Ragnarok. In this case, these companions usually join as a third party member in rare instances. God of War Ragnarok's companion list is composed of the following:

  • Atreus - Atreus serves as the primary companion to Kratos.
  • Freya - Freya will join the player throughout the story, with her kit being similar to Atreus'.
  • Brok - Brok will temporarily join the player at one point. Brok's combat options are perhaps the most unique.
  • Sindri - Sindri will temporarily join the player and will assist in combat as well.
  • Angrboda - Angrboda will temporarily join the player in a similar capacity to Sindri.
  • Ingrid - Ingrid is perhaps the most unique companion in God of War Ragnarok, but fans should know it is controllable in combat.
  • Thrud - Thrud will temporarily accompany the player.
  • Tyr - Tyr will temporarily accompany the player. Tyr will not engage in combat.
  • Thor - Thor will join the player a time or two throughout God of War Ragnarok's story. Thor will engage in combat, but players will not be able to control him.

God of War Ragnarok is available now for PS4 and PS5.
