Warning: Major God of War Ragnarok spoilers ahead.

God of War Ragnarok came out a couple months ago to critical acclaim, netting it several victories at the Game Awards 2022. One of the reasons why the newest installment in the God of War series has achieved so much success is because of the amazing characters that players interact with, such as Odin the Allfather.

Throughout the majority of the game, it's difficult to determine what type of character Odin is. There are times when he works with the protagonists, yet it is known that he has done a lot of awful things before the events of the game. However, by the end, Odin proves to be the main antagonist of the story. Seeing as how Odin has such a huge role in God of War Ragnarok, it makes sense that a lot of the best moments in it involve him.

Tricking Kratos And Atreus as Tyr

Kratos and Tyr in God of War Ragnarok

In the beginning of the game, Atreus believed that he needed to find Tyr and join forces with him due to a prophecy. Knowing this, Odin disguised himself as Tyr and acted as if he were imprisoned, waiting for Atreus and Kratos to find him. When they did, he acted weak and scared, running away from them.

Atreus and Kratos eventually caught up with Tyr and, after pretending to have calmed down, he agreed to join them on their quest, despite not being much of the fighter that he used to be. Odin acted this way so his enemies would accept him into their group while not expecting much of him, nor suspecting that he could be the Allfather. This was an amazing plan and shows how cunning Odin can be.

The Death of Brok

Towards the end of the game, Brok grew suspicious of Tyr, knowing that there was more to him than met the eye. When Brok confronted him about it, Odin decided to reveal who he really was and kill Brok. This was the moment that players learned that the comrade they'd worked with throughout the majority of the game was actually the main antagonist. This plot twist meant players would not be able to look at Tyr or Odin the same way when replaying God of War Ragnarok, making it a moment that impacts the entire game. The scene was very emotional as well, as Brok was built up as a beloved character throughout God of War (2018) and Ragnarok.

Odin Kills Thor

Odin kills Thor in God of War Ragnarok

Throughout God of War Ragnarok, Thor was torn between following Odin's orders and avenging his sons, who Kratos and Atreus had killed in the previous game. In the epic battle between the God of War's army and the Asgardians, Thor saw Kratos and Atreus get close to his daughter. Assuming the worst, he attacked the God of War, but in the middle of their fight, Kratos made a peace offering for the sake of their children.

Odin walked in on Kratos and Thor's conversation and was outraged to learn that his son hadn't followed his orders by taking the God of War's life. As a result, the Allfather killed the God of Thunder. This scene is a great example of how controlling and evil Odin really is, as he would quickly betray his own family for the sake of achieving his goals.

Odin's Death and the End of Ragnarok

Atreus vs Odin

Odin was the final boss that players fought in God of War Ragnarok's campaign. In this fight, gamers control Kratos, with Atreus and Freya fighting alongside him. The three gods were able to weaken him, and Atreus tried to convince Odin to be a better person and end their conflict. However, the Allfather refused, causing Atreus to trap him in a marble. Unsure of what to do, Kratos, Freya, and Atreus passed the marble to each other, resulting in Sindri grabbing and smashing it, killing Odin and avenging his brother. With the Allfather dying, the Nine Realms in God of War Ragnarok were saved, so Kratos, Atreus, their allies, and Odin's remaining relatives went their separate ways.

God of War Ragnarok is available on PS4 and PS5.
