At this point, a God of War sequel or spinoff seems inevitable. Despite only releasing for the PS4 and PS5, God of War Ragnarok sold over 11 million units in just its first three months, putting it on track to be one of Sony's highest-grossing first-party titles. And where there's success, sequels are likely to follow. But as opposed to a full sequel right now, the smarter choice might be a God of War spinoff, and a PlayStation VR2 title wouldn't go amiss.

Though its library is certainly getting bigger and better by the day, PlayStation VR2 is still without its big killer app, and a God of War spinoff could perfectly fill that gap. A God of War VR game has been discussed by fans for years now, but with the improved technology of PSVR2, it could finally be a reality. And to make matters even better, a God of War VR spinoff already has the perfect blueprint to work from.

A God of War PSVR 2 Spin-off Should Follow in Horizon Call of the Mountain's Footsteps

Released right alongside the headset itself, Horizon Call of the Mountain was supposed to be PSVR2's killer app. Unfortunately, Horizon Call of the Mountain ended up falling a little short of expectations, with an over reliance on climbing mechanics, some shaky physics systems, and a run-of-the-mill story. But there's one element of Call of the Mountain that's been unanimously praised by critics and fans, and that's how the game's combat feels, in particular its archery mechanics.

Being a Horizon game, Call of the Mountain naturally focuses on ranged combat with a bow. Thankfully, holding, aiming, and shooting a bow is where the new headset and controllers really shine. Pulling the string back on the bow feels incredibly immersive thanks to the additional weight granted by the Sense controller's adaptive triggers. Aiming is also made extremely intuitive, with eye-tracking technology guiding the arrow to its intended destination. Put simply, shooting an arrow from a bow in Horizon Call of the Mountain feels great, and it paves the way perfectly for a God of War VR spinoff.

Ever since players rolled credits on God of War Ragnarok, they've wanted an Atreus-led spinoff. The end of Ragnarok sees Atreus venture out on his own, finally becoming confident enough to leave his father behind and search for the giants by himself. This open thread naturally lends itself well to a God of War spinoff game where players take control of Atreus during his newfound quest, and seeing it come to fruition in a VR game could be even sweeter.

Horizon Call of the Mountain has already proven that first-party PlayStation VR games can feature incredibly immersive archery combat, and that's Atreus' bread and butter. A God of War VR spinoff could keep bow combat as its primary form of gameplay, with Atreus' different arrow types paving the way for varied and intense enemy encounters, and each enemy requiring a different arrow type to defeat. Players could also use some of Atreus' magical powers, such as transforming into an animal or hearing enemies through walls, both of which would play quite well in a VR setting. A VR God of War game also has the potential to make the Nine Realms stand out even more than they already do, with players being able to directly interact with the wondrous environments they've only seen so far in the last two God of War games.
