It’s a good time to be a God of War fan. Not only is Santa Monica actively working on God of War: Ragnarok, which got a proper trailer and title reveal not too long ago and introduced new characters and story hints, but the God of War PC port was announced even more recently. It’s not that surprising given how Sony has been working on bringing more of its PlayStation console exclusives to PC, but it may be surprising that it’s not Santa Monica directly doing it or even a Sony studio.

With how long it takes to develop God of War games, it’s not too surprising to see Santa Monica focusing on Ragnarok, but that’s now to say it’s not involved with the port whatsoever. Santa Monica Studio is overseeing, or otherwise supervising, the PC version’s development—something directly handled by Jetpack Interactive.

For those who are curious, this Vancouver-based developer specializes and focuses on developing ports. In the past, it has handled port or Orcs Must Die! Unchained, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, NBA Live 14, NBA Live 15, and more. Internally, the studio does list a game prototype “Project X” currently under development, but what exactly that is remains to be seen

God of War, then, may be the biggest PC port Jetpack Interactive has handled, but that’s no reason to worry. Again, not only does Jetpack Interactive specialize in ports, but Santa Monica is supervising closely. Given the importance of the God of War franchise to the PlayStation brand, it’s doubtful Sony or Santa Monica would let a bad port out into the wild.

For those who have been keeping up with Sony’s various acquisitions, it may seem odd that Nixxes isn’t leading the God of War PC port development. Earlier this year, Sony acquired Nixxes to work on PC ports for the brand. However, as this was back in July, the deal probably didn’t go through before development on the PC version began—but fans should expect to see more PlayStation PC ports out of Nixxes in the coming months and years.

What’s made further clear by this move, if perhaps even unnecessarily, is Kratos’ popularity in the gaming world. Sales for God of War’s PC port were through the roof, and overall, it’s a genius move by Sony. While some may be concerned about this move, it’s likely to lead to more franchise investment when God of War: Ragnarok releases, as some PC players may opt for a PS5 by then as long as they can find one. Otherwise, God of War’s PC Port mods are likely to get even more attention on the franchise, giving the already popular game yet another boost.

God of War is available on PS4 and is releasing on PC on January 14, 2022.
