Kratos has encountered many Gods, some noble and some the complete opposite. No matter the status of Godhood, it's best to avoid Kratos' rage-filled path. As one of the most popular videogame franchises of all time, God of War was originally an exclusive release for the PlayStation 2 in 2005. The series has spawned a bounty of sequels, all ripe with new Gods and deities for Kratos to attack with his signature weapons, The Blades of Chaos.

Santa Monica Studio carefully crafted God of War with many well-known gods, took familiar Greek and Norse mythology, then subverted it to create their unique take on grotesque greed and power-hungry beings. Kratos' great strength and willpower help him confront and defeat some of the most famed and noble Gods, who stand among the best God of War bosses.

Updated by Jake Fillery on 5th December 2022: With a new set of gods blocking the peaceful path that Kratos attempts to walk, it is only natural for Kratos to make them aware of his old ways and why knocking on his door is a bad move. God of War: Ragnarok is the latest game in the God of War series and features further adversaries for Kratos and Atreus to battle against, all whilst fighting off prophecy and Ragnarok itself.

Some of the best God of War bosses are also the noblest. The only difference between these gods and Kratos is one is noble, and the other is vengeful. Kratos has killed many gods, and God of War: Ragnarok will not stop the Ghost of Sparta from battling these noble gods. The God of War bosses ranked against Kratos on nobility means they finally have a chance of being the best at something against the Ghost of Sparta.

14 Cronos The Titan

Cronos and Kratos god of war 3

Long ago, Cronos may have considered himself of noble status. He was once the leader and is now the last of the Titans. Son to Gaia, his downfall began at the conception of his sons, Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon, the first Olympians. Once overthrown by his children, he was bound in chains and forced to carry Pandora's Temple.

Cronos seethes with a hatred for the Gods and longs for the power he once had. As a Titan, his size is enormously intimidating, and this heart-pounding boss fight has Kratos traveling across Cronos' body, both inside and out.

13 The Sisters Of Fate, Lahkesis, And Atropos

Lahkesis and Kratos battle god of war 2

The primordial beings with the power to control time themselves demand respect. These sisters also control the fate of beings, Gods included. As the secondary antagonists of God of War 2, the sisters have loyalty to Zeus, which becomes their undoing.

Nothing could stop the hellbent and vengeful Ghost of Sparta from continuing his quest, especially not when the sisters could control time, a power that Kratos demanded to seize.

12 Persephone, Queen Of The Underworld

Persephone god of war chains of olympus

As the central antagonist in God of War: Chains of Olympus, Persephone demands the recognition of nobility. She is the daughter of Zeus, the wife to Hades, and the Goddess of Spring. Her forced hand in marriage with the King of the Underworld had left her bitter and resentful of the Gods, to the degree that she would attempt to put them to sleep and cause the world's end.

It was up to Kratos to put an end to her mission. Despite their mutual suffering at the hands of the Gods above them, Kratos accomplishes his goal, despite Persephone's quest foreshadowing Kratos' crusade.

11 SvartáljÇ«furr, The Dark Elf King

dark elf king god of war

As the Dark Elf King of Alfheim, this boss put Kratos, Atreus, and the player's reflexes to the test. He would often be shrouded in darkness and shadow and utilize this to his advantage to swoop in with a flurry of attacks. His nobility is noted through his crown, with a stronger physique than the other Dark Elves he commands to go after Kratos and his son.

SvartáljÇ«furr's conflict lies with the Light Elves and those who seek the Light of Alfheim. In his death, the King speaks an ominous warning that the pair had made a grave mistake. This decision could have repercussions yet to be revealed in the franchise.

10 Thor

Thor God of War Ragnarok

Born into nobility and becoming a destructor, Thor is Odin’s greatest weapon. This is in part to being the god of thunder and wielding the deadly Mjolnir. For his father, Thor has committed many atrocities across the Nine Realms, with bloodshed following in every quaking footstep of Thor. There are two fights against Thor, both of which add to the God of War best boss fights.

The god of thunder has committed genocide against the Jotun for Odin, all for the sake of nobility. However, as Ragnarok swiftly approaches in God of War: Ragnarok, and Thor continues to grieve his sons Magni and Modi, he begins to question his loyalty to his father, who treats him more like a dog than a noble god.

9 Ares, The Original God Of War

As the Olympian God of War before Kratos, Ares was the God to accidentally trigger a domino effect that led to each God's demise. Without Ares, Kratos would not exist as the God Killer that he is. As the oldest child of Zeus, he demanded power and respect from mortal warriors. One such warrior was Kratos, who would have died in battle if not for swearing servitude to be Ares' champion.

Gifted the Blades of Chaos, Kratos waged war in Ares' name and gave his new blades plenty of blood to feast on. Blinded by rage, the blades feasted on the blood of his wife and daughter, creating a chain of events that led to the gruesome deaths of the Greek Pantheon at the hands of the new God of War.

8 Heimdall, God Of Foresight

It’s Heimdall’s nobility that makes him so utterly unlikable. Heimdall in God of War: Ragnarok is a character that audiences love to hate, considering he is such a jerk. Even his first impression involves the belittlement of Atreus and threatening to throw him off of the wall that protects Asgard.

Heimdall is one of the sons of Odin, and as such, is entirely loyal to his cause. Heimdall is regarded as one of the only true believers of Odin. Which is no easy task to obtain, considering Heimdall sees everything, thoughts or otherwise. Considering Heimdall can predict and dodge every attack, it makes this God of War boss fights ranked among the more challenging.

7 Baldur, The Stranger

As fans awaited Kratos' rage against the mysterious man who trespassed at his cabin, the last thing they would expect was for the skinny man to launch Kratos into the air with a single punch. The boss fight begins against "The Stranger," who is later revealed as Baldur, the Norse God of Light. As the son of Odin, King of Asgard, Baldur spent years in his servitude. Manipulated through the false promise that his father would cure his curse.

Nothing could stop the hellbent and vengeful Ghost of Sparta from continuing his quest, especially not when the sisters could control time, a power that Kratos demanded to seize. If one were to rank the God of War 4 bosses, Baldur would likely take the top spot.

6 Hades, King Of The Underworld

Brother of Zeus and Poseidon, Hades rules as Lord of the Dead, Ruler of the Underworld. Hades keeps dead souls tormented in the River Styx and keeps them from returning to the land of the living.

This boss fight reiterates Kratos' ignorance to consequence, as his actions through this God's death have souls fleeing the now unguarded Underworld.

5 Poseidon, King Of The Oceans

This God's nobility is matched by his power. Utilizing the seas and all they contain, his experience in war and his unrivaled powers are expected to threaten Kratos.

As the first boss in God of War 3, Poseidon meets a gory demise at Kratos' hands and is merely a taste of what awaits the surviving Greek Gods for the remainder of the game's journey.

4 Valkyrie Queen Gna

god of war ragnarok gna malenia elden ring boss fight

The latest Valkyrie Queen in the God of War series is perhaps the most loyal of them all. Even with Asgard destroyed, Gna refuses to allow the memories of Asgard and the loyalty of Odin to waver. She will fight Freya and Kratos to her last breath, as her nobility stands above all else, even if that means dying in battle.

Gna is one of the most challenging, which makes her one of God of War best bosses, and for good reason. Valkyrie Queen Gna has nothing to lose, and that makes her a dangerous threat to Kratos. She will constantly belittle him and remind him of why she is so noble and why he is not.

3 Sigrún, The Valkyrie Queen

sigrun valkyrie queenand kratos god of war

Arguably the hardest boss in the entire franchise, Sigrún is an optional encounter that fans can struggle with. Once the player has found and defeated the eight Valkyries, they can return to the Council of the Valkyries for a showdown with the Queen. The Valkyries are tasked with bringing the worthy dead to Valhalla and are capable warriors for Odin and Asgard.

Betrayed by Odin, each one fell to corruption in mortal forms. Sigrún was able to fend off the corruption long enough to protect her sisters but tragically fell to it. This fight demands the player's full attention and skill set.

2 Odin, The All-Father

Odin in God of War Ragnarok

Odin is perhaps the noblest and most selfish god in Norse Mythology in God of War: Ragnarok. The All-Father is the king of the Aesir gods for a reason. He seeks knowledge above anything and does not care how many of his children have to be ignored for him to obtain it. Odin is a great threat, as he has eyes everywhere and seems to know everything that the Nine Realms offer.

What makes Odin so noble is his status as the king of the Aesir gods. Everyone looks up to Odin. For his respect and advice. The shame is that Odin is never around to provide it, as he is always busy doing his own thing, which, more often than not, involves killing people or making their lives miserable.

1 Zeus, King Of Olympus

kratos vs zeus in god of war 3

As the central antagonist of the Greek Era and father of Kratos, Zeus' nobility is perhaps unparalleled. He is King of the Gods and bolsters a powerful royal status that demands the respect of mortals and Gods alike. His ability to control lightning and the sky itself is the same reason he controls law and order. He is a force to be reckoned with. Out of all God of War bosses ranked, Zeus is perhaps the noblest of them all.

Zeus has long tormented Kratos throughout the games; one such event had Zeus betraying and murdering Kratos. This is what set Kratos on the path of patricide. Killing his father has left repercussions in the later games, as Kratos attempts to break the cycle of sons killing fathers, as he tries to raise his son Atreus whilst maintaining his anger and his Godhood.
