Budding Ghostbusters can pick whether to be on the Ghostbusters team or to play as the ghost. The ghost option won’t be available right away and the main focus of the narrative is to play as one of the humans. Picking one of the busters is the go-to choice regardless and newcomers may appreciate the tips provided in this guide.

6 Upgrade Gear

ghostbusters

There are four main gear types in Ghostbusters Spirits Unleashed that will each be utilized heavily during each mission. Players will have a proton pack, particle thrower, a PKE meter and a ghost trap, all instantly recognizable from the movie franchise. Each one can be leveled up and improved by gaining XP through succeeding in missions.

Eddie at the firehouse upgrades gear upstairs, on a bench at the back, there is also a second bench in the alleyway between the firehouse and rays store that can upgrade gear too. Keeping gear updated with the latest available upgrades is key to victory so be sure to check out one of the two benches when new upgrades are available.

5 Side Hustles

RPGs may be most well known for side quests, however FPS games are no stranger to them either. At the back of the firehouse on a table over to the left is a book that can be interacted with. In the book, players are presented with a selection of secondary quests that can be picked to work through whilst playing through the various main jobs in the game.

Firstly players will want to select the main contract, these are usually three side missions that when completed provide a great boost of XP to use for upgrading equipment. Second, there are daily and weekly challenges that are smaller side quests that also provide smaller amounts of XP when completed. To check on progress simply check the book again or in the menu mid-mission.

4 Calm Down Civilians

ghostbusters

In their universe, the Ghostbusters are a well-known public service in New York City. Usually, the team is called upon to get rid of evil specters from haunted buildings and apartment complexes. Part of the job also includes speaking to members of the public. Ghostbusters Spirits Unleashed has civilians all around each of the areas that the jobs are set in.

These civilians each have a fear meter that the ghosts are trying to fill to make them flee. As a Ghostbuster, players need to pay attention to the civilians, losing too many will fail a job quickly. The best tip is when one is near or panicking, go over to them and hold the action to start the QTE wheel. Hitting both of the prompts will calm the civilians and keep them in the building instead of running away out the door.

3 Training Manual

Every new job involves a period of adjustment and learning the ropes. Being a Ghostbuster is no different. Even though some members of the Ghostbusters team are scientists, they still had to learn the ropes. While the controls and objectives of the game are taught to players via the narrative side of the game, it is easy to forget an element that may come in handy down the line. If a brush on how to play is required, simply read the manual.

Seriously, check out the training manual. Firstly take the stairs at the back of the firehouse to the top floor, from there turn to the left and the prompt for the training manual will show. Head over to the table and press action to open the training manual menu. In the manual players can read up on any part of the game they are unsure of and maybe learn some new tips, so have a peek at the next visit to the top floor.

2 Pick Up Items

ghostbusters

Like any good game, Ghostbusters Spirits Unleashed has collectibles. These collectibles come in the form of mold, fungus, spores and also newspaper clippings. In each of the mission stages, the collectible items can be found strewn throughout the levels, so search every nook and cranny.

The delightful mold, spores and fungus can be picked up by pressing the on-screen prompt when found. They also provide a small XP bonus which is a great reason to try and find as much as possible on jobs. Newspaper clippings aren’t found as frequently, however, when found head out the iconic firehouse to Rays Bookstore and to the right of the counter is a pin board. Here players can check out the clippings and read more in-depth about some lore and history of the world.

1 Use The PKE Meter

ghostbusters

Any fan of the Ghostbusters movies will know, the PKE meter is standard equipment for the team when out trying to bust some ghosts. This small handheld device detects any nearby paranormal activity and will help when a poltergeist is hiding out of sight.

During missions using the meter is always the first thing that should be done as ghosts can spawn anywhere. The read-out from the meter will tell players when the ghost is nearby as well as show when a rift is in the vicinity. Another handy feature is the PKE blast, this miniature shockwave will stun the main target ghost as well as get rid of any minions it may have spawned. So when in doubt, use the PKE meter.

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
