A couple of weeks ago, Sucker Punch released its highly-anticipated game, Ghost of Tsushima, to the PlayStation 4. Immediately after its release, Ghost of Tsushima received positive reviews from players and critics, and it appears that the game is shaping up to be one of the biggest releases this year.
Apart from its positive reception, Ghost of Tsushima also proved to be a commercial success for Sucker Punch given that it was able to sell 2.4 million copies in just three days making it the fastest-selling first-party original debut for the PS4. Now, most players are probably starting to wrap up their journey in Tsushima and are wondering whether Ghost of Tsushima will ever receive any post-launch DLC.
Will Ghost of Tsushima Get DLC?
At the moment, it appears that Sucker Punch has no plans for a story expansion for Ghost of Tsushima. However, it is important to know that the studio never shot down the idea of developing a story DLC. However, those who preordered or purchased the Special Edition, there are several cosmetic items that are unobtainable in-game, but unfortunately, there are no extra missions or quests included.
Given the critical and commercial milestones that Ghost of Tsushima was able to achieve in such a short time, it will not be unlikely for Sucker Punch to reward players for the game's success with story expansions to further deepen their experience in Ghost of Tsushima. But taking everything into consideration, how likely is it for Sucker Punch to release a DLC for Ghost of Tsushima?
Sucker Punch's History of Releasing Story DLCs
It is worth noting that Sucker Punch's other franchises, such as Infamous, received a fair amount of DLC that is focused on exploring story elements that were not fleshed out in the gaming game. As an example, when Sucker Punch released Infamous: Second Son back in March 2014, the studio followed up with free DLCs that revolves around alternate reality game features. These DLCs were split into six parts with the first one merely a week after the launch of the base game, with the final part releasing a month after.
Moreover, Infamous: Second Son also got a standalone DLC called First Light, which was released on August 27, 2014, five months after the launch of Infamous: Second Son. Interestingly enough, First Light did not require players to own the base game, but having Infamous: Second Son on the player's console would grant them access to exclusive content and music. Of course, given that Ghost of Tsushima was a huge hit for Sucker Punch, possibly eclipsing the success of Infamous: Second Son, then it is possible that the same treatment will be applied to Sucker Punch's latest game.
When To Expect the Ghost of Tsushima DLC
So if Sucker Punch does decide to include a post-launch story DLC for Ghost of Tsushima, when should players expect it? At the moment, it's hard to tell given that Sucker Punch hasn't even teased the prospect of any story expansion. But, looking at its pattern with the release of DLCs for Infamous: Second Son, then players shouldn't expect a story expansion for Ghost of Tsushima for a few months at the very least. However, given that Sucker Punch still hasn't announced anything, fans shouldn't get their hopes up, especially since the PS4 itself is approaching the end of its lifecycle with the release of the PS5 at the end of the year.
In the end, whether or not Sucker Punch will develop a story DLC for Ghost of Tsushima, it appears that most players are already content with everything the base game had to offer. On average, Ghost of Tsushima runs at about 20 hours to complete the main story, and probably more for those completionists who wish to explore and fulfill every single side quest in the game. Sure, a DLC that would expand the game's story and a shift in focus to other characters in the game would be great, but given the success and positive reception that the game is still getting, it appears that Ghost of Tsushima doesn't need it.
