Ghost of Tsushima has showcased some impressive gameplay and teaser trailers and as a result, it has become one of the most anticipated titles of 2020. Despite the excitement surrounding the game, there is still plenty of lingering questions from fans who are keen to find out more about the upcoming title set in 13th century Japan. The director of the game, Nate Fox, has now revealed that the game will be a challenge in terms of its combat.

The team behind Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch, are well known for creating the Infamous franchise. The developer has already promised that Ghost of Tsushima will be bigger and different than anything it has done before and the latest news about how combat will work also suggests this. It seems that the gameplay demo may have made actions look slightly easier than they will prove to be.

In an interview Fox detailed the thinking behind the combat, "We are trying to make a grounded game in that sense, so a couple blows from the enemy will kill you" and expanded  “The game is very challenging.” Taking this into account, there may be more of a focus on counter moves and parrying maneuvers rather than a hack and slash focus. It seems that the challenge of the game was a deliberate move by the developer.

The team behind Ghost of Tsushima seems determined to make a game that showcases influences of film and history and Fox claimed, "We watched samurai movies and people go down with one or two strikes, and that is embedded inside of the combat. Beating the Mongols in battle will be hard, but it’s that challenge that makes it feel alive and the victory rewarding."  With this in mind, players may have to be more tactical than they initially thought and also spend time picking up the skills to take on difficult enemies.

It is worth noting that although the fighting looks exciting in the game, and there is also the promise of one on one battles with skilled competition, there are different approaches players can take. Ghost of Tsushima is said to encourage numerous play styles and one of them will be stealth, with that in mind players may not have to become skilled with the sword. With that said building a variety of skills will likely make the game more enjoyable as players travel what appears to be a vast open-world.

There are many elements in the Ghost of Tsushima that are causing excitement from its visuals to its gameplay and this looks set to continue. While some players may have to adapt to the challenge, experienced players will relish the challenge, and others may employ completely different tactics. It seems that the game will have something for all types of players.

Ghost of Tsushima will release on July 17 for PS4.
