The Ghost Recon franchise is making a comeback, but it's doing so in an unexpected way. The newest entry in the Ghost Recon franchise is Ghost Recon Frontline, which is essentially a Ghost Recon-flavored battle royale, though Ubisoft seems to be avoiding that specific term. Regardless, it seems many fans aren't happy with this new take on the Ghost Recon franchise, as the announcement trailer has been flooded with dislikes.

The Ghost Recon Frontline reveal trailer has 4,000 dislikes versus just 972 likes at the time of this writing, and it's likely the gap will only widen. The comment section is full of people complaining about Ghost Recon Frontline, complaining that it's a battle royale game as opposed to a more traditional Ghost Recon experience and criticizing Ubisoft for how it's handled the Tom Clancy license in recent years.

It doesn't help that the latest Ghost Recon game wasn't well-received either, so fans have been hurting for a high quality entry in the series. Ghost Recon Wildlands certainly had its fair share of dedicated fans, but Ghost Recon Breakpoint earned negative reviews from critics and fans alike, with many criticizing its approach to open world design. The poor reception to Ghost Recon Breakpoint may have played a role in the game failing to meet Ubisoft's sales expectations as well.

It seems many fans aren't thrilled with Ubisoft turning most of its Tom Clancy-based franchises into live service games, like the failed Tom Clancy's Elite Squad that shut down after being out for only a year. This dislike for live service games is fueling many of the Ghost Recon Frontline dislikes, though it's unclear if Ubisoft will ever pivot away from its current plans to produce gaming experiences more in line with its older titles or not.

Not only do many fans want to see Ghost Recon return to its roots, but fans have also been asking for a new Splinter Cell game for years. Unfortunately, a new Splinter Cell game has yet to materialize, even though it's been nearly a decade since the last main series Splinter Cell game released.

Ghost Recon Frontline could always rebound from this initial backlash if it turns out that the game is good, though it seems many have already written it off without actually playing it. Ghost Recon Frontline tests will be happening later this month, so it won't be long to find out if the game is worth a look or not.

Ghost Recon Frontline is in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
