The Incident at Hiyoshi Pass is an optional side quest available during Act 1 of Ghost of Tsushima. As one of the very first side quests players are likely to come across, Incident at Hiyoshi Pass acts as a sort of informal tutorial on how to deal with archers during combat.

The quest involves taking out a group of Mongol archers who have entrenched themselves on either side of a wooden bridge and need to be taken out. Here’s how to do it.

Ghost of Tsushima: How to Uncover the Map

In Ghost of Tsushima, there is a way to lift the fog of war from the entire map and highlight every point of interest. Here’s how.

How to Start Incident at Hiyoshi Pass

The quest triggers at Hiyoshi Pass, atop the bridge connecting Hiyoshi and Ariake Prefectures, directly south of Hiyoshi Springs. Players can start the quest by visiting the location of the quest physically or by hearing a rumor about it from a neighboring Survivor Camp. Following a golden bird will also lead players to this location if they’re in the area.

As soon as players approach this area, a peasant will approach Jin, pleading for his help in saving a boy, Banta, who is stuck in the middle of the bridge and is being used as bait by the Mongols to lure the civilians into danger.

How to Kill the Archers Under the Bridge (Saving Banta)

A group of Mongol archers have stationed themselves on the cliffs on both sides of the Hiyoshi Pass under the bridge. Jin needs to take care of these archers before he can rescue Banta.

If players haven’t unlocked the Half Bow, leave the area, complete The Tale of Sensei Ishikawa (main quest), and return to this mission. Taking out the archers without the bow is very hard, depending on the difficulty .

There are a lot of archers on both sides of the pass, so it’s best to thin the herd a little before jumping into melee range. Use the Half Bow to take out as many archers as you can. Landing headshots will result in one-hit kills, but considering the distance, it’s better to take out the archers on the mountain face close to you instead of the one on the far side. The Concentration technique upgrade definitely helps land headshots in this situation.

The trick to this fight is to pay attention to the sound cues. Whenever a Mongol archer is about to shoot an arrow, they’ll shout ‘Dosho, Dosho!’ to indicate to their allies that they’re about to shoot. Whenever you hear this sound, press the dodge button to sidestep the arrow.

Once you’re out of arrows, head down into the valley and cut down the archers individually. Be careful when jumping across large gaps, as that’s when the enemy archers have the highest chance of landing a blow.

After all the archers have been dealt with, return to the bridge and approach Banta to help him to safety, completing ‘Incident at Hiyoshi Pass’. Once completed, players will receive the following rewards:
