Ghost of Tsushima has been out for almost a full year, and Sucker Punch could be cooking up something special for its anniversary. The ESRB seems to have spilled the beans on one potential surprise, as a Director’s Cut of Ghost of Tsushima has been rated by the site.
With the ESRB spoiling a potential melee focus in Death Stranding: Director’s Cut only a few weeks back, this slip-up is not too unexpected. However, fans do not get get much in the way of new information in this description. Copied word for word from the original, the ESRB gives no insight into what will be different about this updated version. Instead, players can only go off the fact that it exists at all, with its title being the most interesting part of the rating.
The “Director’s Cut” subtitle suggests that more content will be included in this version, or that it will bring all the post-launch content into one package. However, all of Ghost of Tsushima’s extra content was free, with even the post-launch co-op mode Ghost of Tsushima: Legends having no cost attached. As such, the Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut would need to include brand-new content for the name to make sense. Fortunately, there is already a perfect contender, as the leaks for Ghost of Ikishima would align perfectly with a Director's Cut.
The Ghost of Ikishima rumors have described the game as a standalone expansion, with players set to experience a much shorter adventure this time around. Likened to Uncharted: Lost Legacy and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, this spinoff would fit with the PlayStation Studios style. With the real-world Ikishima island being right next to Tsushima, and roughly 1/4 of its size, it serves as a believable setting for this supposed mini sequel. It would also be a much more believable scenario for Sucker Punch, as making a full-on sequel in less than a year would be unrealistic.
While rumors have suggested that Ghost of Ikishima will be purchasable and playable as a standalone game, the Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut could bundle it with the original. Similar to how the Ultimate Edition of Spider-Man: Miles Morales provided access to Spider-Man: Remastered, the Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut could be creating a full package. This way, those that missed out on the original could get access to both games for one price. While cut mechanics and content are possible additions, the most likely scenario would see the original game and spinoff bundled together.
With the ESRB listing Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut for both PS4 and PS5, it is unlikely that it will improve on the visuals in any significant way. Still, if the promising Ghost of Ikishima expansion is included, this could be a perfect way for gamers to try out Ghost of Tsushima.
