Charms play a huge role in Ghost of Tsushima, giving players many buffs ranging from mildly useful to downright broken. While the best Charms are often unique, others have duplicates, allowing players to equip multiples of the same charm in one loadout.

The question then naturally becomes: do Charms stack with each other? Is there any benefit to equipping more than one of the same charms, or is it just a waste of a charm slot?

Do Charms Stack in Ghost of Tsushima?

stacking two charms of dual desctruction in ghost of tsushima

The short answer is: Yes, Charms do stack. What's more, percentage-based Charms stack additively instead of multiplicatively. This makes stacking complementary charms one of the best ways to optimize Ghost of Tsushima builds and stack buffs.

If players equip two charms of the same variety, like two Charms of Dual Destruction I, the effects of the two charms will stack, increasing the chance of Jin's attacks to deal double damage from 5% (one charm) to 10% (two charms).

To increase the stacking effect even further, players can equip the Charm of Fortune, whose special effect makes it so that any % based charm's chance to trigger is increased by 50%. Even without any stacking, this charm is an incredible supplement to a lot of percentage-based Charms, but with stacking, it verges on completely broken.

While stacking charms is a viable way of building Jin , using unique charms in each slot is just as effective.

To add even more absurdity, players can equip Charms of Fortunes (there are multiple in the game) to increase this chance to trigger even more. Now, if players have two Charms of Fortune equipped, it will increase the chance of a % effect trigger by 100%. That doesn't necessarily mean it will always trigger (but it can). Here's how it works.

If you stack two Charms of Well-Being I, that's a 15% (7.5% + 7.5%) chance of receiving additional health when healing. Now, if you add two Charms of Fortune, that's a 100% increase to the percentage of the previous effect, which boils down to 15% (Original %) + 15% (100% of 15% is 15%) = 30%.

Now, let's take the Charm of Swift Return as an example. The effect of this charm is: 'Missed Standard arrows have a 15% chance of being recoverable.' If players have two Charms of Swift Return and two Charms of Fortune equipped, every missed arrow is recoverable. Here is how the math works:

  • Two Charms of Swift Return combine their percentage chance to trigger 25% + 25% = 50%.
  • Two Charms of Fortune combine to increase the chance of a % effect triggering by 100%. 100% of 50% is 50%. So, 50 + 50 = 100%.
  • Combined with a fully upgraded Tadayori's armor, players can do a full archer build without problems.

Charm of Fortune I can be obtained by clearing the 'Peace for the Divine' side quest, and Charm of Fortune II is a reward for completing 'Friends in Passing' (Ishikawa Tale).

How Do Minor, Moderate, Major, & Massive Charms Stack?

When browsing Charms, players might notice that many charms don't outright state how much of an increase they provide. Minor, Moderate, Major, and Massive are used to describe these charms' effects. So, the question then becomes, do these charms stack as well?

The answer is yes, they do. But since the game doesn't explain the exact numbers for these buffs, it can be hard to min-max perfect builds. Luckily, the community has investigated charm effects to give a rough estimate of how much of a buff these charms provide.
