After Sucker Punch's 2020 action-adventure title Ghost of Tsushima made waves at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, it's impossible to deny the impact that it has had on trends in the gaming industry. Following its release, games like Team Ninja's Rise of the Ronin and now Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Shadows seem to take after Ghost of Tsushima in both their setting and their gameplay, so to say Sucker Punch's surprise classic had a significant lasting impact is the understatement of the century. However, despite its critical success, Ghost of Tsushima's sequel has yet to be officially announced, although many fans and critics alike are convinced it will eventually see the light of day.

The most recent Ghost of Tsushima-like game to be announced is Assassin's Creed Shadows. Set to be released on November 12, 2024, Assassin's Creed Shadows will see players controlling two protagonists for the first time since Assassin's Creed Syndicate, one who specializes in stealth and another who specializes in direct combat. Now that it has been four years since the release of Ghost of Tsushima, it's likely a sequel is just around the corner, which means it and Assassin's Creed Shadows could be huge competition for one another. That being said, both games already beat each other to two different punches, simply due to their timing.

Assassin's Creed Shadows and Ghost of Tsushima 2 Are Both Winning Separate Battles

Assassin's Creed Shadows Was Announced and Will Launch Before Ghost of Tsushima 2

Even though it could be argued that Ghost of Tsushima 2 is more anticipated than Assassin's Creed Shadows, Assassin's Creed Shadows already has Ghost of Tsushima 2 beat in one big way. Having been over four years now since Ghost of Tsushima was released and there has yet to even be an official announcement about a sequel, Assassin's Creed Shadows has Ghost of Tsushima 2 beat in the timing of its announcement and its release. This means the next Assassin's Creed game has already graced the stage before the highly anticipated Ghost of Tsushima sequel has even been officially spoken of. Still, even though Assassin's Creed Shadows won the battle of announcements and release dates, it doesn't necessarily mean Ghost of Tsushima 2 has lost the war.

Ghost of Tsushima 2 Could Ride in on an Assassin's Creed Shadows-Fueled Hype Train

It's a shame Assassin's Creed Shadows somehow got announced before Ghost of Tsushima 2, but that may be a blessing in disguise for the sequel. Specifically, Assassin's Creed Shadows' release may only serve to increase the hype that Ghost of Tsushima's sequel already has behind it, especially now that the PC port has been released to rave reviews. After all, Assassin's Creed Shadows' announcement alone already has people talking about Ghost of Tsushima 2, so the currently undisclosed sequel is already benefiting from the latest Assassin's Creed title.

It has already been confirmed that no major franchise PlayStation exclusives will be released until the end of Sony's current fiscal year, which occurs in April 2025, so Ghost of Tsushima 2 also won't see the light of day until then. However, that doesn't mean it won't be announced before then, and its announcement has even been fueled by rumors as of late. Assuming Ghost of Tsushima 2 truly is going to happen, it could potentially launch in late spring or early summer of 2025, which would put it just beyond the coattails of Assassin's Creed Shadows' release and give it a little extra hype to ride in on. Still, this doesn't change the fact that Assassin's Creed Shadows has already beaten Ghost of Tsushima 2 to the punch by being announced and released sooner.
