Highlights

  • Ghost of Tsushima returns on PC, bringing together history and gaming in a unique experience during the Mongol invasion of Japan.
  • It would be logical for a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima to focus on the second Mongol invasion and introduce a new antagonist inspired by the general Arakhan.
  • The second Mongol invasion took place several years after the first, so it could inspire Ghost of Tsushima 2 to involve a time skip.

Ghost of Tsushima has been brought back into the spotlight, as the game has finally launched on PC. Developer Sucker Punch's action adventure title brought both gaming and history together into one great experience, with Ghost of Tsushima taking place during the first Mongol invasion of Japan. There has yet to be any official confirmation of a second Ghost of Tsushima in the works, but any such game has a lot to live up to with its main villain.

The main antagonist of the first game was Khotun Khan, who was directly inspired by real-life Mongol leader Kublai Khan. As the wait for Ghost of Tsushima 2 confirmation continues, there are questions as to who will star as the game's antagonist, and the answer may be found in looking at Japan's second Mongol invasion.

Ghost of Tsushima 2 Taking Inspiration From the Second Mongol Invasion

Although there hasn't been anything officially set in stone, it's likely that the events of the second Mongol invasion will be the main source of inspiration for a potential sequel. Not only would this be a natural progression for the story after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, but it also allows a fearsome new antagonist to make his way to the titular island.

Ghost of Tsushima 2's Antagonist

The most logical choice for Ghost of Tsushima 2's antagonist would be a leader based on the Mongol general Arakhan. Named as the supreme commander of the fleet, Arakhan is the most prominent name associated with the second Mongol invasion when it comes to invading fleets. Therefore, it would only make sense for Ghost of Tsushima 2's next main villain to be directly inspired by the historical general. This also paves the way for Ghost of Tsushima 2 to introduce mainland Japan.

The second Mongol invasion made its way to mainland Japan after commanders Hong Dagu and Kim Bang-gyeong defied orders and set out to conquer the mainland by themselves. Landing in Hakata Bay and Nagato Province, both fleets were eventually pushed back by the Japanese. There's no telling what direction Ghost of Tsushima 2 will choose, but it's likely that the sequel will want to expand its scope to feel even bigger than the last game, and bringing some of the fighting to mainland Japan would be a great place to start.

Potential for a Ghost of Tsushima Sequel

Now that Ghost of Tsushima has come to PC, there is a whole new audience to jump into the game's great action and story. When the game first launched in 2020, Ghost of Tsushima brought something truly special with its blend of history and incredible gameplay mechanics. With a resurgence in the game's popularity thanks to the PC port, a second game will hopefully be announced by Sucker Punch soon. Seven years passed between the first and second Mongol invasion; seeing how a sequel handles a time jump would be quite compelling, if that's the route Sucker Punch chooses to go.

There are some high expectations for Ghost of Tsushima 2. At this point, a sequel feels almost inevitable, and if that's the case, then the next main antagonist's inspiration should be pulled directly out of the history books, just like Khotun Khan. Ghost of Tsushima offers a fascinating take on Japanese history, and this needs to become a franchise tradition.
