Dying Light: Definitive Edition brings the open-world, survival horror title to one ultimate experience. When players first land in the city of Harran, they may find themselves overrun by flesh-eating zombies. Worse still, many of the remaining humans have lost hope for civilization and become murderers and looters.

To survive the harsh and unruly environments of Dying Light: Definitive Edition, players will need to utilize every tool at their disposal, and as early as they arrive, using the running shoes that they were given. With these beginner tips, players can ensure not only their survival but also their success in conquering Dying Light.

10 Complete Spike’s First Mission

After completing the prologue, players can find the quest “First Assignment,” which is a quest given out by Spike. This quest is a rather simple one to follow and has the player embark on a relatively safe mission. Toward the end of the mission, players will encounter a sledgehammer-wielding zombie, which is best to avoid, considering their weak weapons.

After players have completed this mission, and after they sleep at the safe house, Co-Op will become available. There are many benefits to Co-Op. Not only can players adventure through Harran with other survivors, but they can also experience the entire journey with friends.

9 The Importance Of Firecrackers

Firecrackers are easy to obtain, and the player can carry an unhealthy amount of them. They are of great use to those that wish to avoid combat, as a well-placed firecracker can distract the infected and help to clear a path for the player to progress without the startling screams of the damned.

Not only are firecrackers great for distractions, but they can also be used on the infected type, “Bombers." These disgusting gas bags will explode when in close proximity to the player. A firecracker will cause the Bomber to be drawn to it and explode after getting too close.

8 Don’t Die

Like most games, dying isn’t exactly a rewarding experience. With a lot of video games, players will simply restart at a checkpoint as if nothing happened. Some games like to punish players, however, and this can be encouraged or countered by changing the difficulty.

Dying Light has a unique punishment in store for players that die. XP is deducted, and how much depends on how exactly the player died. It’s not a major deduction but is certainly something to keep in mind before going all-out in an infected war.

7 Go For Safe Houses

Safe houses are essential for navigating safely across the world of Dying Light. When a safe house is unlocked, players have a new spot on the large map where they can escape to and sleep. They can also use these points to spawn after they die.

Claiming safe houses is a great source of Survivor points, and helps make the protagonist character level up early. Some safe houses are easier to reclaim than others, so it’s best to assess the situation before going in fists blazing.

6 Accept Quests When Possible

Dying Light: Definitive Edition is oozing with quests. They can either be found or given to the player from surviving humans. As the player explores the world of Dying Light, they’ll always come across someone in dire need of help. Completing these missions can be a great morale boost and provide some useful advantages.

Players can obtain exclusive blueprints, materials, currency, and XP from completing side quests. These missions can range in fun, meaning that not all side quests are the same, and some even hold an emotional weight to them.

5 Prioritize Airdrops

Airdrops can appear randomly throughout Dying Light, but players are always given enough warning and a location of where the drop will be. Sometimes, it isn’t worth it, as it could be swarmed with infected or hostile looters that beat the player there. However, the contents can be worth the risk.

Inside the airdrops are essential materials and resources that can be used to craft better and more efficient gear. Not only this, but air drops also contain XP that the player can use to progress further and become even stronger.

4 Scavenge Materials

One of the most vital mechanics in Dying Light is crafting. Players can craft anything from medkits to deadly weapons. Materials are everywhere in Dying Light, so players should be looting at every opportunity they get. Whether that comes from a set of drawers or the trunk of a car, it really doesn't matter.

Merchants also sell materials and it’s best to stock up on these as well. Players will soon be brimming with blueprints to utilize on their many weapons, and, by having enough materials, they can maximize the efficiency and power of their weapons and gear early on in the game.

3 Avoiding Combat

There is no shame in retreat in Dying Light. It’s much better than being eaten alive. Players may find themselves overrun and with little resources and weapons to defend themselves. Harran is a dangerous place thanks to the many undead hordes and avoiding them is the safest way to progress.

Although there is XP to be gained from fighting, it is not nearly enough to warrant fighting infected. Players should focus more on the parkour aspects of the game - especially the grappling hook - while saving the durability of their weapons for threats that cannot be outrun.

2 Keep To The Rooftops

Parkour and the Agility skill tree go hand-in-hand in Dying Light. One of the game’s core mechanics is the ability to run, jump and climb across the rooftops of Harran. Regular infected can’t climb, which means that if the player finds themselves in a pickle, then climbing up to the rooftops is the best way to safety.

Not only are rooftops great for getting out of a jam, but they’re also the best way to travel. Running and jumping across rooftops is the fastest and most efficient way to get to where the player needs to go and can help them to avoid much-unwanted confrontation with the brisling infected streets.

1 Fight The Night

Players should not be fooled by the primary warning that Dying Light teaches them. As players experience their first few days and nights in Dying Light, they might find characters and tutorials teaching them to stay clear of the streets when the moon rises. They should ignore this warning.

Loot is a lot better at night, even if the world is a lot deadlier. The streets are louder, and the infected are angrier. Night Hunters will always be around to make sure the player doesn’t go home to sleep. However, dying does not negate XP, and so it’s worth the extra risk for the bonus XP and loot.

Dying Light is available now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
