Player Mistakes

Back to All Characters

Sangonomiya Kokomi’s release in Genshin Impact is one of the largest flops in the game’s banner history. As cute as her design is, she was far from viable in the meta, even after HoYoverse tries to increase the viability of healers in the game content.

Luckily, now, more people have come to accept the idea of having Kokomi in their Genshin Impact team. Some of them may be impressed by Ocean-Hued Clam, while some others are simply a victim of her weapon banner. Either way, as the Priestess will soon join more parties, Kokomi-havers should be aware of these common mistakes players make when playing Sangonomiya Kokomi.

7 Underestimating Healing Bonus

Barbara with Healing Bonus artifact

Healing Bonus is usually only useful to increase the amount of health regenerated by a character’s healing ability. However, for Sangonomiya Kokomi, this stat also enhances her Auto Attack Damage when her Elemental Burst is active.

In fact, using a Healing Bonus Circlet on Sangonomiya Kokomi is better than stacking HP% mindlessly. So when building Kokomi, remember to not opt for more health over this stat. However, note that Healing Bonus Circlet is one of the rarest items to drop in Genshin Impact, so it may take patience to get one.

6 Not Adjusting Her Artifact Set Based On Role

Is Ocean-Hued Clam better than Heart of Depths for Kokomi

Initially, Kokomi’s DPS potential is often seen as underwhelming. However, with the release of Ocean-Hued Clam, the Priestess can now take several roles in the team. This flexibility means players need to know what they want with their Kokomi and adjust her equipment based on that.

Here’s the best equipment for Kokomi’s every role:

  • Healer Build: Catalysts with HP% like Everlasting Moonglow and Prototype Amber are a great choice. For her artifact, 4-Maiden Beloved is the best option to maximize her healing.
  • Support Build: Kokomi should use a weapon that grants a buff like Thrilling Tales of Dragon Slayers or Hakushin Ring. Use 4-Tenacity of the Millelith for her set.
  • Sub-DPS Build: As a Sub-DPS, Kokomi will not be the primary focus of the team. Therefore, she will need some Energy boost to refill her Burst. Either opt for an Energy Recharge weapon or Catalyst that grants Energy via its passive. For the artifact, 4-Ocean-Hued Clam is the absolute best choice.
  • Main-DPS Build: Since Kokomi will be the star of the team, players should focus on having enough Genshin Impact Battery to feed her Burst. With a dedicated Battery, the Priestess will not need an Energy Recharge weapon. Instead, opt for HP or ATK Catalyst like Everlasting Moonglow, Skyward Atlas, or Prototype Amber. Just like the Sub-DPS build, 4-Ocean-Hued Clam is a must for this role.

5 Building Her On Crit

Kokomi Story Quest in Genshin Impact

Ever since her announcement, Kokomi has been a living meme with the fact that she has a -100% Crit Rate passive. This leads to people wondering whether Kokomi can reach positive value in Crit Rate or is she meant to never Crit? Many players would find ways to enhance her Critical Rate, with 4-Blizzard Strayer + Cryo Resonance being the most popular idea.

Once Sangonomiya Kokomi is released, it becomes clear that the Watatsumi Priestess can indeed Crit. However, while this meme build proves to work, building Kokomi on Crit is a million miles away from optimal. It’s best if players ignore this idea entirely.

4 Prioritizing Attack Instead Of HP

Since Kokomi can be built as a Main DPS now, some people may think that they should equip her with Attack artifacts. Nevertheless, the Priestess’ damage is significantly boosted thanks to Ocean-Hued Clam. The artifact deals AoE damage that scales with the accumulated healing Kokomi did in a 3s span.

Since the Strategist’s healing scales with her HP, building her on Attack means players will be healing less. Less healing means less Ocean-Hued Clam damage. Eventually, this will end up with Kokomi losing a decent number of DPS.

3 Underestimating F2P Weapons

Catalyst Billet in Genshin Impact

Usually, F2P weapons are far less favored compared to their gacha counterparts. However, for Kokomi, she actually works great with Genshin Impact weapons that can be forged. Considering how Everlasting Moonglow mostly isn't worth the investment (as only Kokomi can fully benefit from it), players are highly recommended to settle with the free Catalyst instead.

The HP% Catalyst, Prototype Amber, is an amazing choice for Kokomi, and it suits her no matter which role players want Kokomi to be. Furthermore, if people would spare five Billets, then this item can come close to Everlasting Moonglow in performance.

2 Prioritizing The Wrong Talent

Kokomi talents in Genshin Impact

Usually, if a character would play the Main DPS role, players naturally will upgrade their Normal Attack talent. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for Sangonomiya Kokomi. Even as a Main DPS, her Normal Attack is not as significant as her Burst.

Therefore, when it comes to talent priority, here’s the breakdown for each role:

  • Healer Build: Only upgrade Elemental Skill
  • Support Build: Only upgrade Elemental Skill
  • Sub-DPS Build: Elemental Burst = Elemental Skill > Normal Attack
  • Main-DPS Build: Elemental Burst > Elemental Skill > Normal Attack

1 Not Knowing Hydro Resonance

Hydro Resonance in Genshin Impact

Before Kokomi got her specific artifact set, activating Hydro Resonance in the team is mostly redundant. This synergy increases Incoming Healing Bonus by 30%, which isn’t bad, but considering Kokomi’s healing is already amazing on its own, this effect may end up being a waste. Furthermore, it’s important to note that Kokomi’s Elemental Burst only benefits from Healing Bonus, which is different from Incoming Healing Bonus.

Luckily, with Ocean-Hued Clam, higher healing will lead to higher damage. So if players are using Kokomi as the Main DPS, then putting another Hydro character in the team can make a lot of difference. It’s recommended to put Xingqiu there as he’s the best Hydro Battery in Genshin Impact. The Guhua Disciple will help with both restoring Kokomi’s Burst and triggering the Elemental Resonance.

Genshin Impact is now available on Mobile, PC, PS4, and PS5. A Switch version is in development.
