  • Freminet, the third character, is socially awkward and excels at diving. He was orphaned and adopted by a magician duo, along with the twins, who keep their Fatui affiliation a secret.

A story is never complete without a complete painting of the characters' backstories, and lore lends Genshin Impact's fantasy world an aura of adventure and enchantment that contributes to its irresistible allure. As players explore more regions in the Teyvat continent through HoYoverse's stream of updates, more characters join the overarching storyline to add more layers for gamers to peel back. Genshin Impact's Fontaine Update most notably introduced a new region, expanded underwater gameplay, and new personas such as Lynette, Lyney, and Freminet - each with bits of lore for players to unravel.

Whispers of their additions circulated for quite some time before their eventual debut in Genshin Impact's comprehensive 4.0 Update, triggered by glimpses of twins Lyney and Lynette in the Teyvat Chapter Storyline Preview: Travail trailer back in 2020. Headlining the update with their banners, the trio are formidable playable characters with unique abilities, and like any other character in Genshin Impact, players can learn about their past through story quests and hidden dialogues. However, some details are still shrouded in mystery, and there is more to their lore than meets the eye.

Lyney, Lynette, and Freminet Have Differing Personas in Genshin Impact

Although twins can appear similar, they often exhibit traits that help viewers discern one from the other. Lyney and Lynette share violet eyes and a pale complexion, but that's where their similarities end, as they are polar opposites. Lyney, a 5-star Pyro Bow user, is an extrovert with an affable attitude, relishing attention and wowing his audience with displays of magic tricks. Donning a signature performer's attire complete with a top hat, Lyney puts on a charismatic persona for his fans, but he has a soft spot for his siblings. On the other hand, Lynette shies away from the spotlight that comes with her role as a stage performer, preferring to leave all the fan duties to her brother.

Lynette has a feline heritage, evidenced by her cat-like ears and fish-dominated diet. Just like the furry creatures, she is remarkably clumsy and prefers to steer clear of machines due to her fear of breaking them. The twins have a close relationship in Genshin Impact, and their traumatic past experiences contribute to their bond. Lynette's feline blood caused a few problems for the siblings growing up, as observers would often point out her odd features and insinuate she wasn't Lyney's sibling since he appeared human. These statements would drive Lynette to misery, and she would curl up in a corner by herself - and the frequent occurrences contributed to her insecurity and reserved persona gamers see in Genshin Impact.

Freminet takes his sister's reserved nature up a notch, struggling to maintain conversations with individuals other than his robotic penguin pet, Pers. Due to his socially awkward personality, Freminet doesn't join his siblings in the path of the performing arts, finding solace in disappearing into the ocean for long swims. His pursuit of his passion has led him to receive acclaim as one of the best divers in the nation, renowned for his professionalism, razor-sharp focus, and extensive knowledge of Fontaine's underwater mechanics. He also differs from his siblings in terms of appearance since they have unique parentage, featuring gray-blue eyes and freckled skin.

Orphaned in his teenage years, Freminet finds a home with the magician duo who adopt him into their fold under the guidance of an unknown figurehead known as "Father". Lyney and Lynette are orphans themselves, saved from the ire of an abusive noble by "Father", and Lyney is undertaking missions for the House of the Hearth in preparation to take over their mentor's role in the future. While the trio form a family unit in Genshin Impact, the twins appear closer to themselves than Freminet, and their affiliation with the Fatui is a secret they keep under wraps.

Genshin Impact is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, and mobile devices. A Switch version is in development.
