Layla is a scholar of the Rtawahist, one of the six main schools in Genshin Impact Sumeru Akademiya. Rtawahist is a discipline that focuses on the study of the stars like astronomy and astrology. This makes Layla respectful of Mona Megistus, the broke astrologist that writes for The Steambird’s astrology column.

Sadly, it appears that Layla is having a hard time as a student, always being sleep-deprived as she tries to keep up with her studies. However, being sleepy all the time isn’t the only issue players will be facing with Layla. The following mistakes people make when playing Layla in Genshin Impact should also be noted.

6 Not Knowing How Her Shooting Star Works

Layla’s Elemental Skill offers more than a simple shield. Every 1.5s, a star will appear on the shield, and once four stars exist, they will turn into Shooting Stars, dealing Cryo damage to nearby enemies. Two stars can also be summoned by casting Elemental Skill. This means players should be able to easily create four stars, at the very least every three seconds.

Travelers can also make use of characters that have stacks on their Elemental Skill like Yae Miko in Genshin Impact. Just keep in mind that all four Shooting Stars have to be fired first before new stars can be generated, so players only need to cast two Skills at most to trigger Layla’s Shooting Stars.

5 Stacking Energy Recharge

Layla comes with a pleasant surprise with her Elemental Burst. Not only does it have a large AoE and low Energy requirement (40 Energy), but it also has a 100% uptime, with a 12s duration and 12s cooldown. This means players can endlessly have her Burst on the field, applying Cryo non-stop.

However, one thing Travelers may want to understand would be how she generates Elemental Particles. Unlike typical characters that immediately generate Energy when their Elemental Skill hits an opponent, Layla only generates particles when her Shooting Star is triggered. This means players won’t get to regain Layla’s Energy by simply casting her Skill. Luckily, this won’t be much of an issue once players unlock Layla’s second Genshin Impact Constellation.

4 Underestimating Her Supportive Potential

Layla may seem like a typical shielder and Cryo enabler, but she can actually offer more than that. First, her Elemental Burst has a 12s cooldown and 100% uptime. This timer exactly matches the duration of 4pc Noblesse Oblige, meaning players can easily maintain a 20% ATK buff for the entire team.

But, those who have 4pc Tenacity of the Millelith should definitely opt for this artifact instead. Layla will trigger the 4pc effect when she casts her Skill, then a few seconds later when her Shooting Stars deal damage. This unit can theoretically maintain 4pc Tenacity of the Millelith’s effect close to 100% uptime. The artifact set grants 30% shield strength on top of a 20% ATK buff. Players should use Tenacity for a stronger shield, while Noblesse is better for a stable ATK buff.

Additionally, Layla also has a small damage boost after players unlock her C4. The effect won’t trigger often, but when it does, it’s a decent DPS increase for the team.

3 Not Utilizing Her Cryo Application

Layla has great potential to work as a Cryo enabler. Her Elemental Burst is clearly perfect to periodically apply the Element on surrounding enemies, but on top of that, Layla’s Elemental Skill is also decent for this job.

Players shouldn’t expect too much when it comes to her damage, but if they require a character that can reliably apply Cryo on the field, then Layla is a great contender. Both her Elemental Skill and Burst have 100% uptime, so Travelers can rely on Layla to deal endless Cryo damage.

2 Building Layla On Attack

Even as a sub-DPS, Layla should not be built on ATK. Her Elemental Skill and Shooting Star may scale with ATK, but upon unlocking her Ascension Passive, Layla’s Shooting Stars will also scale with her HP. Meanwhile, Layla’s ultimate solely scales with HP; ATK is irrelevant.

This means both Layla’s offensive and defensive value follows her HP, making ATK a poor stat to stack on. If people wish to increase Layla’s personal DPS, then it’s best to focus on HP and Critical stat instead.

1 Using The Wrong Sword

Layla is a Cryo character that scales with HP for both her shield and Elemental Burst. Naturally, this means a Sword like Key of Khaj-Nisut is her best option as it grants a massive amount of HP. However, when equipping Layla with a Sword in Genshin Impact, players should first consider her team and her role.

If Travelers need a shielder, then the Key of Khaj-Nisut is certainly the best. If players need an Elemental Mastery boost, then the Key of Khaj-Nisut is also excellent. However, if the team needs ATK and Normal, Charged, and Plunge damage boost, then Freedom-Sworn should be considered. Finally, if Layla is meant to work as a sub-DPS, then offensive equipment like Primordial Jade Cutter and Mistsplitter Reforged are better.

Genshin Impact is now available on Mobile, PC, PS4, and PS5. A Switch version is in development.
