Scaramouche of Genshin Impact is one of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers. Having appeared in the Unreconciled Stars event in Genshin Impact version 1.1, he was one of the first Harbingers to be introduced to players. Since then, he’s appeared in permanent content, notably during an Archon Quest set in Inazuma.

He’s also been mentioned in the Genshin Impact trailer that showcased the rest of the Harbingers, and it’s been hinted that he’s gone rogue with the Electro Gnosis. And though Scaramouche may seem fairly detached from the Archon of Inazuma, he shares a somewhat familial bond with the mysterious Ei and the Raiden Shogun.

Scaramouche’s Origins in Genshin Impact

Before the Raiden Shogun of Genshin Impact was created to serve as Ei’s vessel, the Electro Archon worked on a preliminary prototype. This first puppet would become Scaramouche, but he had no name at the time. When he gained consciousness, the unnamed puppet shed tears, leading Ei to believe that he was too gentle in nature to serve as her vessel.

Thus, Ei sealed the young Scaramouche’s power and allowed him to follow his own path in life. She supposedly built the Genshin Impact Shakkei Pavilion located in Tatarasuna, Inazuma for him. Scaramouche then spent most of his early life there. In Genshin Impact, the Traveler can unlock the Shakkei Pavilion as a One-time Domain, and its in-game description reveals that “a deeply disheartened eccentric” once lived there – likely Ei’s yet unnamed puppet.

The young Scaramouche then began traveling across Inazuma of Genshin Impact, which earned him the title “wandering eccentric.” While roaming Nazuchi Beach, which is located in Yashiori Island of Inazuma, young Scaramouche became acquainted with a man named Katsuragi. Katsuragi worked as the yoriki or helper of a skilled inspector and bladesmith named Mikoshi Nagamasa. Katsuragi and young Scaramouche soon became close friends. However, Katsuragi warned the wandering eccentric to keep his identity a secret.

Unfortunately, Katsuragi’s companions later decided to pursue the young Scaramouche in Genshin Impact. Though the reasons for this are unclear, it could be because they figured out his true nature. During the course of events, Katsuragi committed an unspecified “misconduct” – perhaps allowing young Scaramouche to escape – and was struck down by Nagamasa. Young Scaramouche then swore to exact revenge on the bladesmith. He also gave himself a name: Kunikuzushi, which refers to malicious, scheming characters found in Inazuma’s traditional theater.

For Kunikuzushi, Nagamasa’s demise was not enough. As such, he orchestrated the fall of the entire Raiden Gokaden, which consisted of the five bladesmithing schools in Inazuma. In the events of Genshin Impact, only one of the five schools remains – the rest having been destroyed or discontinued.

At some point, Kunikuzushi learned of the Fatui and joined up, believing them to be an interesting group. Through the Fatui’s knowledge, he unlocked the powers that Ei had sealed within him long ago. Thus, he quickly climbed the ranks of the Snezhnayan organization, earning a position as the Sixth Fatui Harbinger of Genshin Impact, The Balladeer. It’s unclear whether this ascension in rank occurred before or during Kunikuzushi’s quest to destroy the Raiden Gokaden.

Upon becoming a Genshin Impact Fatui Harbinger, Kunikuzushi gained the name that most players knew him for – Scaramouche. Like Kunikuzushi, the title was also derived from the art of theater. Though in this case, it originates from the roster of stock characters in Italian theater. His particular trope emphasizes disrepute and unreliableness, which are both traits that Scaramouche does indeed possess.

According to Viktor, a Fatui Diplomat based in Mondstadt of Genshin Impact, Scaramouche isn’t particularly well-liked within the organization. He’s difficult to get along with, doesn’t know when to stay silent, and is prone to dropping insults. Even the other Fatui Harbingers seem to dislike him. However, there’s no doubt that he’s a powerful adversary, with the intellect to back it up.

Scaramouche in the Events of Genshin Impact

In Act 3 of the Archon Quest of Inazuma, the Traveler mourns the death of Teppei. Teppei was a member of the Watatsumi Army, fighting alongside playable characters like Gorou and Kokomi of Genshin Impact. However, he somehow acquired a Delusion, which caused him to age rapidly, resulting in his early death.

The Traveler then investigates where the Delusions are coming from and finds Scaramouche, who claims that he’s simply “following orders.” Before the two can clash, however, the Traveler sets off Scaramouche’s trap and falls unconscious. Genshin Impact’s Yae Miko then appears to save them, but it’s later revealed that she traded in Ei’s Gnosis for the Traveler’s life. This is an interesting decision on Yae’s part, as she always believed that Scaramouche was a “disaster waiting to happen.” Now, he has the means to cause said disaster.

At this point, Scaramouche has cut all contact with the rest of the Fatui Harbingers. This is confirmed in the Labyrinth Warriors event, which was released during Genshin Impact version 2.2. In one of the quests with Childe, he reveals that Scaramouche has run off with the Electro Gnosis but that his betrayal wasn’t surprising. After all, every Fatui Harbinger has an agenda of their own. Childe then muses about the Traveler’s intentions, wondering what they’ll do when Scaramouche finally surfaces again.

So far, that’s all that’s known about Scaramouche and his lore. A cunning and unpredictable menace, he certainly lives up to both his chosen names. Whether he’ll feature in the upcoming Sumeru update of Genshin Impact is unclear. as it’s heavily suggested that Dottore is the Harbinger that will take center stage there. Still, he could make a few cameos and wreak havoc during a few quests.

Much later in the game, perhaps HoYoverse could return to Inazuma and introduce a quest where Scaramouche interacts with Raiden Shogun, Ei, or even Yae Miko. It would make for interesting conversations as they’re essentially a dysfunctional family. Until HoYoverse makes an official announcement, however, the community will have to wait (or turn to reliable leaks).

Genshin Impact is available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, PS5, and a Nintendo Switch version is in development.
