Microsoft has officially announced a Gears of War prequel game called Gears of War: E-Day. Prior to the Xbox Games Showcase, rumors were swirling about the company's plans for its massive Gears of War franchise. The rumors made a lot of claims about what fans could expect from Gears of War at the event, but as it turns out, none of them were true.

Going into the Xbox Games Showcase, there were rumors that Microsoft was going to announce a Gears of War collection, ala Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Other rumors claimed that the company was going to announce Gears of War 6, which would continue the story from where Gears 5 left off. Suffice to say, no one was expecting the next Gears of War game to actually be a prequel, bringing back fan-favorite character Dominic Santiago.

A talented Gears of War fan shows off their awesome hand-made rug, which pays homage to the game disk for the third game in the series.

As revealed in the Gears of War: E-Day announcement trailer, the new game will serve as an origin story for hero Marcus Fenix. Set during the horrific Emergence Day incident, where the Locust hordes first emerged from the Earth, the game will see Marcus and Dom as they team up against these monstrosities for the first time ever. The trailer doesn't reveal too many other details about what fans can expect from Gears of War: E-Day, beyond the fact that it's set 14 years prior to the events of the first Gears of War game, though it has been confirmed that it's being built using Unreal Engine 5, which should deliver "unprecendented graphical fidelity."

Gears of War: E-Day Trailer

Unfortunately, Microsoft stopped short of providing a potential release date for Gears of War: E-Day, and with no gameplay in sight, it's hard to say when exactly fans will get to play the game. It's already been five years since Gears 5 was released to the masses, and so it's safe to say that many fans are growing anxious for a fresh Gears of War experience. Hopefully, the wait for Gears of War: E-Day isn't too long. Maybe the long-rumored Gears of War collection will actually be released to help fill the void in the meantime, though fans shouldn't hold their breath.

The newly-announced Gears of War: E-Day prequel game isn't the only upcoming Gears of War project. A Gears of War movie and TV series are both in development at Netflix, so there's plenty for Gears of War fans to look forward to in the years ahead.
