Miramax Television is reportedly developing a Gangs of New York television series with Academy Award-winning director and writer Martin Scorsese attached to executive produce and direct the project's first two episodes. The brand-new series looks to center around the 1927 non-fiction novel The Gangs of New York by American author Herbert Asbury.
Scorsese is no stranger to Gangs of New York, having directed the 2002 cinematic adaptation of the novel, which featured an incredibly talented assembled cast. Notable stars from the film include Academy Award-winner Daniel Day-Lewis, Cameron Diaz, Liam Neeson, and Academy Award-winner Leonardo DiCaprio. The well-received and critically praised film earned an impressive ten nominations at the 75th Academy Awards but unfortunately walked home empty-handed.
As reported by Deadline, plot details surrounding the developing Gangs of New York series are unclear, but the project will look to venture down a path that differs from the 2002 Scorsese-directed film. The project will be a brand-new take on The Gangs of New York non-fiction novel and will include a new cast of characters that Miramax Films did not feature in the 2002 film. The Asbury novel details numerous confrontations between rival gangs in New York City in the mid-to-late-1800s.

Audiences have seen a similar path taken with other notable projects, such as the Amazon Prime original series A League of Their Own, which is currently available to watch on the streaming platform. The eight-episode series is a brand-new spin on the 1992 film, which starred Academy Award winners Geena Davis and Tom Hanks. The creators of the hit series, however, noted that A League of Their Own was not a remake of the classic film but a reimagined take to tell the stories that were absent from the original adaptation. Miramax Television's Gangs of New York will look to do the same, which is something audiences will need to be aware of before diving into a story drastically different from the one many remember.
Aside from Scorsese's reported involvement with the Gangs of New York series, not much else is known. Casting decisions for the project will presumably surface as development progresses further, but it will be interesting to see what the Academy Award-winning director can do with this brand-new take on a story he is so incredibly familiar with from his previous work. Only time will tell if notable faces from the original film will make a brief or series-long appearance, but audiences can look forward to brand-new exploration into the iconic confrontations that brewed in New York City.
