Despite the success of the books and shows which have a seemingly perfect world for adaptation, Game of Thrones games are a rarity and none have yet achieved tremendous success. For this reason, and the fact that fans can't get enough, many Game of Thrones mods have been created for other fitting games. Best of all are total conversion mods that bring the world to life and often feel like complete games in their own right.

Updated March 21, 2024 by Joe Grantham: Even if a groundbreaking Game of Thrones or Song of Ice and Fire game were to be released, fans would likely never be fully satisfied and would continue to mod their favorite medieval games to feature Westeros and beyond.

There are also plenty of older mods for games that have been out for a long time, and yet the best Game of Thrones mods remain great, having been perfected over the years. Some of the best GOT mods such as CK3: AGOT also receive regular updates, with new features to constantly get excited about.

1 Westeros: Total War

Total War: Medieval 2

Despite its age, Total War: Medieval 2 remains a great strategy game, allowing players to relive iconic battles from the Middle Ages, such as the Battle of Agincourt. Additionally, with the help of the Westeros: Total War mod, players can also recreate battles that took place in Westeros.

The mod features dozens of customized units with instantly recognizable sigils proudly flying from banners or painted onto shields. Outside of the battles for which the Total War series is best known, players can also enjoy trying to conquer all seven kingdoms and more. While this mod uses the books as its main source of inspiration, there is a sub-mod called Westeros: Age of Petty Kings which incorporates more elements from the show. Furthermore, for those who prefer the quality of more modern games, there is another Game of Thrones mod on this list for a different Total War game.

2 Age Of Thrones

Age Of Empires 2: HD Edition

The Age of Empires franchise was one of the original driving forces for the strategy genre, with players building up their civilizations from scratch in real time. As Age of Empires 2 is set in the Middle Ages, it makes it the best of the bunch for a Game of Thrones mod and this idea has been released with Age of Thrones.

This mod adds 19 playable civilizations from the world of A Song of Ice and Fire, with most of the factions having their own unit types decked out in the colors of the most prominent Houses from Westeros. Some factions even have their own buildings, as well as technologies and heroes which slightly alter the gameplay. Beyond iconic Houses, players can also take on the role of the Night's Watch, the Brotherhood Without Banners, or even a Dothraki Khalasar.

3 A Clash Of Kings

Mount & Blade: Warband

Just like its successor, the original Mount & Blade: Warband also features its own Game of Thrones mod, known as A Clash of Kings, which is the title of the second book, the setting for the mod.

This colossal total conversion mod features a map that covers all of Westeros and part of Essos, and inhabiting these lands are over 20 factions, lords and ladies, mercenaries, and other ruthless Game of Thrones characters. With over 1000 unique objects, custom quests, storylines, and events, this is one of the most complete Game of Thrones mods for fans to enjoy. It is also one that players can enjoy with their friends.

4 CK2: AGOT

Crusader Kings 2

While the Game of Thrones mod for Crusader Kings 2 is not as good as its successor for Crusader Kings 3, CK2 AGOT is still a great experience and even has some benefits. The first of these is that while CK2 no longer sits at the top of the list of best grand strategy games of all time, it is now free-to-play, meaning that anyone with a PC can enjoy the mod.

5 Game of Thrones - Immersion

It is no surprise that Skyrim, the game that is synonymous with mods, features its own range of Game of Thrones mods. Over the years many have been made from small mods which add just a few items like shields or other weapons, to companion mods and much larger overhauls.

One of the best mods is the Game of Thrones - Immersion mod which adds over 120 unique items to the game, including clothing and interior decoration. With this mod installed, players can fully immerse themselves in Westeros, and they can of course tinker around with other similar mods to try and take the experience even further

6 Trial Of The Seven Kingdoms & Realm Of Thrones

Players of Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord are lucky enough to have access to two massive Game of Thrones total conversion mods. The first, Trial of The Seven Kingdoms is set immediately after the end of Robert's Rebellion and features custom maps, cultures, armor, and much more.

Video Games To Play If You Like Game Of Thrones

Game of Thrones fans may not have many games to play in that world. They can make up for it by trying one of these games instead.

The second mod set during the events of the TV show is called Realm of Thrones and particularly excels at bringing the aesthetics fans know and love to life. The armor created is even better than the best armor in Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord.

7 A Civ Of Ice And Fire

Sid Meier's Civilization 6

Civilization 6 is the latest installment in the illustrious Civ series and one of the best 4X strategy games for beginners. It also features a fantastic Game of Thrones mod known as A Civ of Ice and Fire which lets players choose a leader from the series.

Each leader has their own features and abilities just like they do in the base game, but these have been tailored to the world of Game of Thrones. They also come with their unique troops or even dragons in the case of Daenerys Targaryen. Games are played out on maps of Westeros and Essos.

8 Seven Kingdoms: Total War

Total War: Attila

Total War: Attila may not be the best Total War game, but it does have a fantastic Game of Thrones mod, Seven Kingdoms: Total War. This is a total conversion mod that lets players pit the armies of Westeros and beyond against each other.

Dozens of custom models have been created for many Houses and factions, with the main inspiration being the TV show rather than the books. As some Total War maps involve the sieges of castles or cities, iconic locations such as Winterfell have also been recreated. While the setting of Attila doesn't line up as well for GOT as it does for Total War: Medieval 2, the more modern graphics and mechanics make for an overall better experience.

9 WesterosCraft

Minecraft

Dedicated Minecraft fans are known for recreating their favorite worlds within the game and this is no different for Game of Thrones. WesterosCraft is a constantly evolving mod that allows players to explore the entire continent of Westeros. Given the size of Westeros, this is no small feat.

Crusader Kings 3 is a game designed with mods in mind and boasts many great total conversion mods. Best of all, however, is Crusader Kings 3: A Game of Thrones, also known as CK3 AGOT which perfectly recreates the world of Ice and Fire. Players delving into this mod will choose a starting character such as Ned Stark or Robert Baratheon and rule through them in times of peace and war.

The amount of content and detail included in this mod is incredible; from the beautifully sculpted map and an epic soundtrack to unique mechanics and custom models for cities, castles, armor, and weapons. With events, mechanics, and plenty of flavor, this is by far the best Game of Thrones mod for both role-play and strategy. The mod is technically in the Beta stages of development, meaning new features and details are always being added. For example, a new Bookmark was added which allows players to start a few decades before the events of Robert's Rebellion, during the War of the Ninepenny Kings. The southwest coast of Essos was also added, with more of the continent expected in due course.
