HBO Max has finally revealed the premiere date for House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones prequel series that fans have been waiting on for quite some time. Sharing a new poster for the series on its social media channels, the streaming service confirmed that the show will premiere on August 21, 2022. Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, the upcoming series will also air on Sundays.
The news was also shared on the official Twitter page for House of the Dragon, the 10-episode series that is based on author George R.R. Martin's 2018 novel Fire & Blood. The series will narrate the story of House Targaryen, and it is already known that it will be set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. However, the latest poster forms an immediate connection to the original series, which fans are bound to appreciate.
The poster that HBO Max shared showcases a dragon egg, with a dragon peeking from behind it. In Game of Thrones, Emilia Clarke's Daenerys Targaryen is given three dragon eggs as a gift on her wedding day. While they seem useless at first, Daenerys manages to miraculously hatch them, revealing three dragons that went on to become an integral part of the final battle in the series. But, it was made clear that her ancestors had also used dragons in the past to conquer the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros.
With the House of the Dragon revealing the story of Daenerys' ancestors, it isn’t surprising to see a dragon egg make an appearance on the latest poster. It could very well end up being one of the dragons that Aegon Targaryen, the son of King Viserys Targaryen and Alicent Hightower, used to unite the realm. However, fans are disappointed that the integral character from Martin’s novel has not been cast in the upcoming series yet. Only time will tell whether he makes an appearance. For now, fans can rest assured that a lot of dragons will be a part of House of the Dragon.
While Aegon might not be in the character roster, many of the Targaryen clan members from Martin's book will be a part of the series. This long list includes Paddy Considine's King Viserys Targaryen, Olivia Cooke's Alicent Hightower, Matt Smith's Prince Daemon Targaryen, Emma D'Arcy's Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Steve Toussaint's Lord Corlys Velaryon, Eve Best's Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, Fabien Frankel's Ser Criston Cole, and Rhys Ifans' Otto Hightower.
House of the Dragon premieres on HBO Max on August 21, 2022.
